Race 5: BEZANOVA(3)

Magic Tips Best Bets

Jockey: Piere STRYDOM – Trainer: Sean TARRY

LUCKY LUCIANO was bitterly disappointing when he weakened into a well beaten 2nd over the Vaal 1200m, last time out. He showed his true capabilities when he finished strongly for second behind subsequent winner Bouclette Top on debut over this c & d in his penultimate outing. His trainer has rightly given the son of Black Minnaloushe a 17 week break as he was reportedly distressed after that last effort. The break could be exactly what he needs and he should make amends tonight. The engaging of Strydom is very encouraging. However, he takes on a strong field here and will need to be at his best.

Jockey: Robbie FRADD – Trainer: Ormond FERRARIS

The light weights could have a big say in this competitive handicap and CAPTAIN HADDOCK gets the nod. The son of Spectrum is a good handicapper and he may have still just needed his last start when he was outrun late under a big mass over this c & d, two weeks ago. He should easily handle this rise in class and should give another honest performance with just 53kgs on his back.

Race 5: BEZANOVA(3)
Jockey: Marthinus MIENIE – Trainer: Alec LAIRD

This contest features another one of trainer Alec Laird’s smart up-and-coming three-year olds.BESANOVA is unbeaten from two outings and he looks to have come a long way since he won his debut over six furlongs at Clairwood in mid-August. The son of Bezrin quickened smartly despite returning from a rest on his Highveld debut and kept going to win well over a mile in yielding conditions on the inside track, three weeks ago. He has been heavily supported in both those winning efforts so is obviously rated quite highly by his conditioner. He will strip much fitter this time around and looks to be destined for bigger things. His high merit rating ensures that he is well treated at the weights in this graduation contest and he should take some beating tonight.

Race 7: PEJ(5) – TOP BET
Jockey: Robbie FRADD – Trainer: Charles LAIRD

The three-year old Kahal filly PEJ looks an exciting sprinting prospect despite having raced on just three occasions. She flashed her speed to beat some smart proven sorts on her debut over the Clairwood six furlongs and then was caught late by another top sort over this c & d on her Highveld debut, next time out. She was disappointing when she failed to quicken in a feature last time but that was her first try over seven furlongs and around the turn. She makes her handicap debut tonight and drops to what could be her best trip. She should give a very good account of herself.

Race 6: BARBEL RUN(1) (Each Way)
Jockey: Marthinus MIENIE – Trainer: Alec LAIRD

The Alec Laird yard could again come to the fore in this contest and BARBEL RUN is the stable’s representative. This son of Joshua Dancer has shown his best efforts over sprints and he produced a good comeback run over six furlongs in his penultimate start. He was slightly disappointing last time out but did try 1450m for the first time. He has his third run after the rest tonight and reverts over sprints and that will be crucial. He also drops heavily in class.
