RACING ON THE VAAL SAND TODAY HAS BEEN ABANDONED
Winning Form Best Bets
Race 1: FELAN(5)
Race 2: KING’S SOLDIER(1)
Race 3: FIGHTING FORCE(1)
Race 4: RIVULET(2)
Race 1: CANDLELIGHT QUEEN(11)
Jockey: Piere STRYDOM – Trainer: Lucky HOUDALAKIS
CANDLELIGHT QUEEN had legitimate excuses for her poor last showing on the turf but had useful form prior to that. The daughter of Greys Inn has done well on the sand and is possibly most effective over the minimum trip. She gets the services of Strydom for an in-form yard and she should be very competitive here.
Race 2: KING’S SOLDIER(1)
Jockey: Sherman BROWN – Trainer: Leon ERASMUS
KING’S SOLDIER is a very speedy sort that has shown lots of promise to date. He seemed just in need of his comeback run when he tired late over this trip last time but will strip much fitter today. He makes his debut on the sand which is the only concern but his speed should stand him in good stead here and he should go close.
Race 3: FIGHTING FORCE(1) – TOP BET
Jockey: Gavin LERENA – Trainer: St John GRAY
This is a very moderate contest and FIGHTING FORCE stands out like a sore thumb. The son of Announce has had his fair share of chances but he is proven on the sand and such is the poor quality of this field that he is likely to start as a very warm favourite. He stayed on well for second over 1450m on this course last time and that run indicated that he should see out the extra 150m. He has run well for Gavin Lerena before and is the one to beat.
Race 6: DEVON GOLD(8)
Jockey: Collen THABANA – Trainer: Adam KETHRO
DEVON GOLD is seldom beaten far and the KZN raider certainly took to the sand on his local debut, three weeks ago. He was slow into stride and raced wide on that occasion but was running on nicely at the finish for 2nd, beaten just under two lengths by Storm Incoming over this c & d. He has travelled up again from KZN today which is slightly concerning but he will be re-united with his 2.5kgs claiming apprentice and should easily handle today’s rise in class. He shoulders bottom weight of just 50kgs and has a massive chance of going one better, especially if he jumps on terms.
VALUE BET FOR TODAY:
Race 7: FUNNY GLORY(4) (Each Way)
Jockey: Gavin LERENA – Trainer: Romeo FRANCIS
This is a very competitive contest and caution must be exercised. FUNNY GLORY gets the narrow first verdict and the six-year old gelding continues to drop in class. He has a smart record on this course and he has been taking on considerably stronger for some time now. He is c & d suited and should give another honest performance, even from his wide barrier. Gavin Lerena takes the ride.
