Race 6: MERCADO(5)
Jockey: S’manga KHUMALO – Trainer: Sean TARRY

There are some highly rated three-year olds in this contest and it promises to be a cracker. MERCADO hails from the Sean Tarry yard and the grey colt showed good improvement on his seasonal debut, three weeks ago. He made steady progress to finish a creditable 4th behind an unbeaten sort and should have plenty more to come today. He has shown ability from day one after he beat older rivals on his debut over this trip at Scottsville. The son of Toreador should be very competitive here.

Jockey: Marthinus MIENIE – Trainer: Alec LAIRD

DESERT RAPTOR blotted his copy in his first run in soft conditions over 2450m last time out but can make amends today. The Silvano gelding had consistent form before that and he ran on well to finish a close third behind subsequent feature winner Kindle over nine furlongs in his penultimate outing. This extra furlong is not an issue and he should quickly bounce back to form.

Jockey: Raymond DANIELSON – Trainer: Sean TARRY

CAGE FIGHTER’s last run showed that he has huge ability but he has plagued by major issues. He was returning from a lengthy 35 week absence on that occasion but produced a powerful burst to thrash his maiden rivals over nine furlongs in yielding conditions on the Turffontein inside course. He would have recovered nicely during his subsequent three week break and should strip a lot fitter today. He rises sharply in class on his handicap debut but one can’t help but feel that he has tons of improvement still to come. The long run-in and the extra furlong should suit him really well.

MONTELUPO has had his fair share of chances but despite being costly to follow, he has often been in the mix. He relished being fitted with blinkers for the first time in his most recent start as the son of Right Approach ran on eye-catchingly for third over a mile on the inside course at Turffontein. He will again wear that headgear and is sure to love this longer run-in. Interestingly, he finished runner-up in his only start on this course and should go very close in today’s contest.

Race 9: PINSTRIPE MISS(8) (Each Way)
Jockey: Julius MARIBA – Trainer: Alec LAIRD

PINSTRIPE MISS is coming along nicely and she has lots of scope for improvement. The lightly raced daughter of Jet Master runs well for Mariba and she may have still just needed her last start over a mile on the inside course. She produced a strong finish to win going away from her field in her penultimate outing over 1450m and importantly has her third run after the layoff today. Her pedigree suggests that she will love every bit of this extra furlong and she drops in class. The long run-in will suit her very well.
