Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 1: MY FRIEND LEE(7)
Jockey: Andrew FORTUNE – Trainer: Lucky HOUDALAKIS

The grey filly MY FRIEND LEE finished runner-up in both her sprints on this track and quite surprisingly she was beaten by the exact same margin. The 3rd placed runner of her last start Goodness Me did the form no favour when finishing unplaced next time out but this well-related daughter of Pathfork still has good scope for improvement and she should handle today’s extra furlong on her pedigree. It is encouraging that in-form jockey Andrew Fortune partners her once again.

Top Bet
Race 2: THE STONE THROWER(1)
Jockey: Piere STRYDOM – Trainer: Joey RAMSDEN

THE STONE THROWER produced two smart recent efforts in KZN and the Cape resident is overdue his second career win. Of course, he is no stranger to the Highveld and this track in particular as the Joey Ramsden inmate finished close-up behind a subsequent winner over this c & d on his local debut in April. He had excuses for his subsequent flop two weeks later but is well-weighted against some light- ly raced younger sorts and is the one to beat. He is the yard’s only entrant on the card.

Race 6: ANGEL’S POWER(2)
Jockey: Juan-Paul VAN DER MERVE – Trainer: Michael AZZIE

The day’s topliner features a competitive line-up of nine entrants who contest this six-furlong event. ANGEL’S POWER continues to perform well for the Mike Azzie yard and the bay gelding is knocking hard at the door for his overdue third career victory. He ran on smartly for 2nd behind the top sort Kangaroo Jack in a feature at Turffontein recently. The son of Miesque’s Approval is c & d suited and he should go close at this level.

Race 7: SAIL FOR JOY(7)

Jockey: Ryan MUNGER – Trainer: Scott KENNY

There are numerous form runners in this competitive handicap which should yield a thrilling finish. The narrow first selection goes to the ultra-consistent three-year-old bay gelding SAIL FOR JOY who has confirmed himself as a decent sprinter in the making. He crushed his maiden rivals over this c & d in his penultimate effort and followed up that performance with an eye-catching run at novice level in a strong line-up, next time out. The Argonaut gelding was slow into stride over this track & trip that day but ran on strongly for a close 2nd behind another useful type. He still appears ahead of the handicapper and represents decent each/way value in this contest.

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY:

Race 8: GOLD SHADES(9)

Jockey: Akshay BALLOO – Trainer: Coenie DE BEER

GOLD SHADES had threatened a big performance and she delivered when producing a smart finish to beat track specialist TANGERINE LADY (0.5kg better off) by a neck at Turffontein over 1450m, two weeks ago. She was penalised three pounds for her effort but the daughter of Mogok is equally effective down the straight and she will again benefit from a 2.5kgs apprentice allowance. She will enjoy the likely fast pace in this contest and should again be picking off her rivals in the final furlong.
