Race 5

BIG TIME CHARLIE has finished closer to the winner in each of his last three starts, the latest when second over seven furlongs, one and a half lengths behind the winner, but he came three wide into the home straight that day, before staying on well over the closing stages. The gelding has drawn gate seven and will be looking to go one better today.

A 3yr old and a 4yr old filly could chase him home, with the slight preference going to ARRABBIATA, who is seldom far off the action, finishing fourth last time out over six furlongs, just under two lengths back from the winner, this after jumping awkwardly, then over-racing in the early stages, before hanging out in the home straight. She gets gate five and should be right up there when they hit the line.

ANTARCTIC PRIDE is a long-time maiden, but she showed solid improvement to finish second last time out over seven furlongs, just a head behind the winner and the form of that race has been franked. She was held up at the 300M mark in that contest but still managed to finish off her race well. From one gate outside the latter, she should be included in all bets. There is an unraced runner in the field, so keep an eye on the betting markets to get some indication as to whether her connections believe that they can win first time out. Any betting support for her should be respected.

Race 6

The day’s value bet, MINIMAL had his consistency rewarded with a one-length victory last time out over five furlongs and the form of that race has stood up well with two runners out of that contest subsequently winning. He went from jump to wire that day and from his wide draw ten, he is likely to attempt similar tactics today.

TOTALLY DISCREET is a 4yr old filly taking on the boys, but she reared at the start before staying on well to end up in fourth place last time out over six furlongs, two lengths back from the victor. She returns from a 29-week break but has had the benefit of a barrier trial. She will have to negotiate a wide draw of fourteen, but she should be doing her best work late.

MARKWELL DREAMER had posted four second-place finishes prior to ending up in fourth place last time out over today’s sprint trip, 0.7L off the winner. He attracted plenty of betting support that day, but was slow away and had to be held up between the 400M and 200M, so that effort was encouraging. The gelding faces a wide draw twelve, but with better luck in running, he will be hoping to make amends today.

Race 7

This looks to be a tricky race with plenty of runners in with a realistic chance of finding the winner’s box, so some caution is suggested. LOCH EAGLE has consistent formlines to his name and followed up his penultimate run victory over seven furlongs with a second-place finish next time out over the same journey, 4.8L back from the winner, but that was at a stronger centre and he jumped awkwardly and raced three wide throughout. He faces a wide draw ten, but nevertheless he could be the one that they all have to beat.

SPANGLER is the stable companion to the top choice and had to be eased off the heels of another runner at the 250M mark, before striking the front at the 250M pole to win going away. Notwithstanding having to deal with a wide draw fifteen, he makes a solid back-up for the yard.

CROSS TALK also won his penultimate start over seven furlongs and then finished fourth next time out when stepping up to 1500M, just under three lengths adrift of the winner. He tried to go from gun to tape that day and has won a subsequent barrier trial. Whilst facing an even wider gate sixteen, he is likely to employ the same front-running tactics here.

Race 8

STARLINER is a 3yr old filly taking on males, but she won her penultimate start over seven furlongs by putting two and a half lengths between herself and the opposition and then finished seventh next time out over a mile, 1.8L off the winner, but that was at a stronger centre and she was slow away that day. The form of that race has however been franked with three runners out of that event subsequently winning. She resumes from a 22-week rest but did finish third in her only barrier trial to showcase her well-being and is taken to be the best bet on the day’s card, despite having to deal with a wide draw fourteen.

RURA PENTHE’S last three runs have yielded a second and two third-place finishes, the latest over six furlongs, 1.8L behind the winner, notwithstanding hanging in down the home straight and he has had a subsequent barrier trial. From his kinder draw six, he could emerge as the biggest danger to the top pick.

TURNAWAY is a versatile sort who won his penultimate outing over 1900M and then finished second when dropping down to 1300M, just a head back from the winner when returning from an 11-week rest. He raced up with the leaders on that occasion and looked like a possible winner, only to be nabbed in the shadow of the post. The gelding is drawn wide in gate fifteen, but he should use his early gate speed to move across without expending too much gas to be involved in the finish.
