Race 5
CAMPALDINO had his consistency rewarded with a one and a half length victory last time out over 2100M. He finished well from some way back that day, suggesting that the extra ground on offer here will be to his liking. The gelding gets a handy draw four and will have 3kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice and is made the best bet on the day’s card.
SUN GOD won over 2400M three runs back, finished seventh in his penultimate start over 1500M and then fourth in his latest outing over 2100M, 2.8L behind the winner. He stayed on well that day and whilst drawn wideish in gate seven, he will be having his peak run after returning from a 23 week break and gets the services of Zac Lloyd, son of ex-SA champion jockey Jeff Lloyd to aid his cause.
CASUAL CONNECTION followed up his penultimate run victory over 2200M with a third place finish next time out over the same journey, 1.2L back from the winner. The gelding tried to go from jump to wire that day and from his kinder draw two, he is likely to attempt similar frontrunning tactics today.
Race 6
The day’s value bet, ICONIC TREASURE came four wide into the home straight, but then made good late progress to finish sixth last time out over 1200M, three and a half lengths back from the winner. He has pulled a useful gate two and could prove hard to topple.
BOTANICA has finished closer to the winner in each of his last three starts, the latest when third over 1200M, 1.7L behind the victor. He showed plenty of toe in that event, only to be grabbed late and from pole position and with Zac Lloyd in the irons, he should be right up there when they hit the line.
STRUFF is a 5yr old mare taking on the boys, but she goes for her hat-trick after victories over 1400M and the latest over 1200M, albeit by just a short-head. She was returning from a 26 week break that day and battled all the way down to the wire. The mare jumps from draw five and should not be lightly dismissed.
Race 7
PIPERITA followed up her penultimate run victory over 1300M with a second place finish next time out over 1200M, beaten just a short-head, this after coming three wide into the home straight and chasing hard down to the line. She will be having her peak run after returning from a 27 week spell and from a cozy gate two, she will be hoping to chalk up her second career victory here.
PELOSA jumped awkwardly bumping another runner and then struck the front at the 250M mark, before holding off all the late challengers in the dash down to the wire to win her maiden race last time out over 1300M by two and a half lengths. She takes on stronger here, but will have her peak run after returning from a similar 27 week absence and could give Zac Lloyd a red-letter day in the saddle.
LINWOOD has an even better pole position and has only had two runs to date, winning on debut over 1100M and then ending up in seventh spot next time out over 1200M, just over four and a half lengths back from the victor. The filly was returning from a 38 week break on that occasion and was bumped at the start, before staying on well over the closing stages. She will also have 3kgs removed from her allocated weight courtesy of her claiming apprentice and should be included in all bets.
Race 8
This looks to be a tricky race to end off the day’s Jackpot with plenty of runners in with a realistic chance of finding the winner’s box, so some caution is suggested.
KADALL was returning from a 19 week break and was bumped at the 400M mark, before kicking clear of the opposition at the 150M pole, only to be run out of it late, finishing third in his latest outing over 1300M, just under three lengths off the winner. The gelding has a handy draw four and may prove to be the one that they all must beat.
ASGARDA is a 5yr old mare bumping males, but she won her penultimate start over 1100M and then finished eighth last time out over 1300M, 5.8L adrift of the victor, but her jockey reported that she led on the wrong leg for much of the time, so that effort should be ignored. The mare is drawn one inside the top pick and will have her peak run after returning from a 17 week rest.
EDITED BY has won two of his last three starts and went from gun to tape to claim a 0.7L victory in his last start over 1300M. The form of that race has stood up well with two runners out of that contest subsequently winning and whilst the gelding will have to deal with a wideish draw eight, on the plus side, he will have 3kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice.
