Race 5
THE PREDICTOR won over 1400M three runs back, finished second in his penultimate start over 1600M and then third in his latest outing over the same journey, two lengths behind the winner. He ran on strongly from some way back that day and from his handy draw two, he will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways here and is taken to be the value bet on the day’s card.
A 4yr old filly and a 6yr old mare could chase him home, but DOWNTOWN’S ABBEY may well prove to be the better. She has cracked pole position and was hampered at the start when finishing fifth last time out over 1500M, just under four and a half lengths behind the winner. The filly will be having her peak run after returning from a 10 week rest and she should be right up there when they hit the line.
BREAKAWAY WEEK followed up her penultimate run victory over 1300M with an eighth place finish next time out over the same trip, just over four and a half lengths back from the winner, but she jumped awkwardly that day and raced three wide throughout. The form of that race has however been franked and from draw six and having 2kgs taken off her back thanks to her claiming apprentice, she should not be lightly dismissed.
Race 6
EVERLASTING STARS has posted two solid last runs, finishing fourth last time out over 1000M, just under a length and a half lengths back from the victor. She now has her first run for her new trainer and returns after a 27 week spell without having had the benefit of a barrier trial, so her fitness will have to be taken on trust, but if fully settled into her new surroundings, she should give a good account of herself here, despite jumping from the widest draw of them all in gate nine.
ISAGURA struck the front at the 100M mark to win his maiden race over 1000M by just over a half length going away. She on the other hand has a useful gate two and whilst taking on stronger here, she may well be up to the task at hand.
TENNER won on debut over this c&d, albeit by just a short-head. She would have learnt from that experience and with the natural improvement that can be expected, she could be good enough to chalk up a quick double. The filly has pulled gate six and will have ex-SA jockey Keagan Latham in the irons, so will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle.
Race 7
The day’s best bet, ORTHIES won on debut over 1000M and then jumped awkwardly bumping another runner and before not getting the clearest of passages in the home straight to end up in fourth place last time out over 1100M, just over a length back from the victor. The gelding will have to negotiate a wide draw nine, but he could nevertheless prove hard to topple.
CHEMTRAIL also won first time out, but in his case over 1100M by a half length. He returns from a 27 week break without having had the benefit of a barrier trial, so his fitness will have to be taken on trust and faces a wide draw ten, but on the plus side, he will have 4kg removed from his allocated weight courtesy of his claiming apprentice and could emerge as the biggest danger to the top pick. In addition, he would have come on further with that run under her belt.
POWER SMASH won his maiden race over 1000M by a head at the fourth time of asking when returning from a 20 week break and racing three wide throughout. The form of that race has been franked and from his kinder draw five, he should be involved in the finish.
Race 8
Three 3yr old fillies could fight out the finish to this race and complete the trifecta, but HONEY PERFUME is taken to lead the field home. She has only had four runs, for one second and two third place finishes, the latest over 1000M, just over a half length off the winner and has won a subsequent barrier trial.
The filly finished off her race powerfully that day and from her cozy draw two, having her peak run after returning from a 24 week spell and with the services of Keagan Latham, she could be the one that they all must beat.
QUEIN STEP showed plenty of toe and was only grabbed in the shadow of the post when finishing second first time out over 1000M, beaten just a head. From gate six, she will be hoping to go one better here.
MISSIE LEE was slow away, but chased hard all the way down to the wire when finishing third on debut over 1000M, just under a half length off the winner. She will have to deal with the widest draw of them all in gate twelve, but she should be doing her best work late.
