Race 5.

MATLOCK has only had the three runs to date, finishing third on debut over seven furlongs and then winning his last start over the same journey by 3.7L, when returning from a 26 week break. He went from jump to wire that day and from his handy gate two, he is likely to adopt the same tactics here and prove difficult to reel in over the closing stages of the race. As such, he is made the best bet on the day’s card.

PATTON has put in two solid last efforts, the latest when fourth over 1350M, two lengths behind the winner. He was slow away that day and then had to be held up between the 400M and 200M marks, before staying on well over the latter stages. The gelding faces a wide draw ten, but will have ex-SA jockey Brandon Lerena in the irons, so will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle.

ARAMIS has finished third in his last two starts, the latest over 1250M, just under four lengths back from the winner when returning from a shorter 24 week rest. He was slow away in that contest and found himself in last place, but then produced a strong finish over the latter stages. He is drawn one outside the latter and should be doing his best work late.

Race 6.

The day’s value bet, REAL PEACE came four wide into the home straight before making good late progress to end up in second place last time out over a mile, 2.7L behind the winner, suggesting that he should enjoy the extra ground on offer here. He has pulled a wide gate nine, but given his style of racing, he is likely to be dropped out of it in the early stages and then start to pick off the front runners over the closing stages of the race.

LAWYER’S DELIGHT goes for his hat-trick after two victories over seven furlongs, the latest by just over a length and a half. He raced wide that day, but still managed to produce a strong finish and on that effort, he should enjoy the greater test of stamina. The gelding is drawn one outside the top choice and has his peak run after returning from a 30 week absence.

ROCCAFORTE followed up his maiden win in his penultimate start over a mile with a second place finish over 1500M next time, just under three lengths adrift of the victor. He tried to go from jump to wire that day and stayed on well to secure second spot. From gate seven, he should not be easily dismissed.

Race 7.

This looks to be a tricky race with plenty of runners in with a realistic chance of finding the winner’s box, so some caution is suggested. The tentative top pick goes to ORYX who won his penultimate run over 1100M when returning from a 36 week break and then finished sixth next time out when stepping up to 1250M, 17.7L adrift of the winner, but that was in very heavy going, so that run is best ignored. He is a speedy sort who should put his draw five to good use.

RITA MAY is a 3yr old filly taking on the boys, but she has won two of her last three runs, the latest by 1.7L over five furlongs and was immediately rested for 20 weeks. She returns here after having had two barrier trials, winning the latest to showcase her well-being. She gets a wide gate nine, but she is another speedy sort who should be able to work her way across without using up too much energy.

QUIET RIOT is drawn one outside the latter and won over this five furlong sprint trip four runs back and then finished third in her two outings prior to disappointing when stepping up to 1100M, finishing fifteenth, just under ten lengths off the winner, but he jumped awkwardly that day and never got into the race at all. He will however get 1.5kgs taken off his back today thanks to his claiming apprentice to aid his cause.

Race 8.

Two 3yr old fillies could fight out the finish to this race and complete the exacta, but CARARTIE is given the nod for top spot. She won her maiden race last time out over 1300M by just under two and a half lengths when returning from an 18 week break, this despite overracing and coming the widest of them all into the home straight. She fought all the way down to the line that day and jumping from draw seven and if showing the same determination today, she could prove hard to topple.

DENETTA had finished third and then second before winning her maiden contest last time out over 1300M by 0.7L. She gets a kinder draw three and will be hoping to chalk up a quick double.

TICK TOCK BOOM is seldom far off the action and stayed on well to end up in second place last time out over 1300M, just under a length behind the winner. He has pulled a wide gate thirteen, but seems likely to turn in another honest effort here and should be included in all bets.
