Race 5
LUGARNO had finished second in his two runs prior to winning his maiden race last time out over 1600M when putting 3.8L between himself and the opposition. He struck the front at the 350M mark that day to win going away and the form of that race has been franked. The gelding takes on stronger here, but gets a handy draw four and may well be up to the task at hand. As such, he is made the best bet on the day’s card.
ROLLING MAGIC also won his maiden race last time out, but in his case over 1400M by 1.8L. He raced just behind the leaders that day and then kicked clear of the field at the 150M mark, before fighting off all the late challengers in the dash down to the wire. From his useful gate two and with non-claiming apprentice, Zac Lloyd, son of ex-SA champion jockey, Jeff Lloyd in the irons, he could emerge as the biggest threat to the top pick.
WHATADILEMMA is seldom far off the action and was crowded and had to be steadied at the 200M pole when finishing third last time out over 1500M, just under a length back from the winner, so he had his excuses. He is drawn the widest of them all in gate eight, but he will have 2kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice and should be involved in the finish.
Race 6
There are seven unraced runners in the field, so as is always the case in these types of races, a keen eye should be kept on the betting markets to get some indication as to whether any of the connections believe that they can win first time out. Any betting support for a runner or runners should be respected. Of the raced runners, a 4-year-old and two 3-year-old fillies may well prove to be the best, but RAINBOW GODDESS could be the pick. She has only had two runs to date, finishing fourth on debut over 1000M and then sixth next time out over 1100M, 4.3L back from the winner, but she did come three wide into the home straight and then raced green all the way down the home stretch. She does return from a 21-week break, but has won both of her barrier trials to showcase her well-being. The filly faces a wide draw twelve, but on the plus side, she will have 2kgs removed from her allocated weight courtesy of her claiming apprentice.
TEQUILA BABY has also only had two outings, and did improve when finishing sixth last time out over 1100M, just over two and a half lengths off the victor. She jumped awkwardly in the event, bumping another runner, but stayed on well over the closing stages. She is another who returns from a 21-week rest, but has had two barrier trials, finishing third in the first and winning the second. From her cosy draw two, she should be right up there when they hit the line.
CIRCLE OF LOVE makes her debut, but she has had three barrier trials, finishing second in the penultimate one and winning the latest. If not too green in the running and despite a wide draw nine, she could make a winning start to her career.
Race 7
The day’s value bet, RIVER PAT put her disappointing penultimate start over 1300M behind her when finishing third next time out over 1000M, just under one and a half lengths back from the winner, when returning from a 29-week break. She had to be switched at the 300M mark in that event, but finished off her race well over the latter stages. The filly has pulled a handy draw four and gets a set of blinkers fitted for the first time. If these have the desired effect, she should be a big runner here.
JET EMPRESS followed up her penultimate run victory over 1000M with a second-place finish next time out over the same c&d, 1.3L back from the winner. She battled all the way down to the wire that day and although drawn wideish in gate seven, she will have 3kgs taken off her back for the services of her claiming apprentice.
USEAPIN won her maiden race last time out over 1000M by 0.8L, but it should be noted that she reared at the start that day, losing three lengths, but finished off her race powerfully, so that effort was commendable. The filly is drawn one inside the latter and will be having her peak run after returning from a 17-week absence.
Race 8
MOGUL MONARCH has finished second in his last two runs over the same c&d, the latest just a half-length behind the winner. He made good late progress on that occasion and jumping from gate seven, he could give trainer Kim Waugh a quick double in the day’s Jackpot, should the top pick win the previous race.
UP THE FRONT goes for his hat-trick after two victories over 1000M, the latest by just under a half-length, but he had to be held up between the 200M and 100M mark in that event, before finishing off his race well when eventually seeing daylight. The colt will have to deal with a wide gate nine, but he will be having his peak run after returning from a 22-week rest.
MELLIFLUENT has had just two runs, winning first time out over 1100M and was then fractious in the starting gates when ending up in sixth spot next time out over the same c&d, 5.8L adrift of the victor and was immediately rested for 18 weeks. He returns here after having had two barrier trials, finishing fourth in the first and third in the latest. The gelding has a useful draw three and will have Zac Lloyd in the irons to aid his cause.
