Race 5

ALICIA ROMA is a 3yr old filly taking on the boys, but she put five and a half lengths between herself and the opposition when winning over five furlongs on debut and then finished second last time out over the same sprint distance, just a head behind the winner, but she was hampered at the start that day. She recovered well to take the lead, only to be collared in the shadow of the post. She gets draw seven and returns from a 22-week rest, but has put in two encouraging barrier trials to showcase her well-being and as such, is taken to be the best bet on the day’s card.

DIVINE OKAY made the expected improvement to win by two lengths over five furlongs at the second time of asking. He was slow away on that occasion and the form of the race has stood up well with two runners out of that contest subsequently winning. From gate five, he is an obvious threat to the top choice.

BOOMSONG followed up his penultimate run victory over five furlongs with a second-place finish next time out when stepping up to six furlongs, just a half-length behind the winner. The gelding was slow away that day, but kick clear of the field at the 300M mark and was only run out of it late. He attracted plenty of betting support that day and from a handy draw two, he will be looking to make amends today.

Race 6

As with the previous race, the top pick AWESOME WONDER is a 3yr old filly taking on males, but she followed up her penultimate run victory over a mile with a ninth-place finish next time out over ten furlongs, just under eleven and a half lengths adrift of the winner, but that was in very heavy going. In addition, she was hampered down at the start, so that effort is best ignored. She faces a wide gate eleven, but if producing her better efforts, she should be right up there when they hit the line to give Willie Pick the first two legs of the day’s Jackpot.

FIVE CROWNS on the other hand has cracked pole position and also won his penultimate run over a mile before following that up with a fifth-place finish last time out over nine furlongs, just over two lengths back from the winner. He raced wide without cover that day so should have finished closer to the winner as a result. He gets 1.5kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice and should be in the mix.

FIELDS OF HONOUR had solid form prior to disappointing when ending up in tenth place last time out over a mile, 26 lengths behind the winner, but that was in very heavy going and his jockey reported that he was not suited to the conditions. He has pulled gate five and gets ex-SA jockey Brandon Lerena in the irons, so will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle. The also gets a set of blinkers re-fitted for today’s race and if these have the desired effect, he should be a big runner here.

Race 7

The day’s value bet, ONE WAY STREET won his penultimate start over six furlongs and was hampered at the start before attempting to go from gun to tape last time out over six furlongs, only to end up in second place just under a length behind the winner. He jumps from draw seven and could prove difficult to reel in over the closing stages of the race.

OAKFIELD MAHOGANY has won two of his last three runs, the latest over six furlongs by a length. He jumped awkwardly that day, but hit the front at the 100M pole and then held off the chasing pack in the dash down to the wire. He is drawn the widest of them all in gate nineteen, but he should use his early gate speed to move across without expending too much energy. He will also be having his peak outing after returning from a 14-week break.

PATAGONIAN was bumped at the start and was then held up off the heels of other runners over the final 100M before finishing 12thlast time out over five furlongs, just under four lengths behind the winner, so under the circumstances, that effort was encouraging. The gelding faces a wide gate 13, but has finished second in a subsequent barrier trial to boost his confidence.

Race 8

PO KARE KARE won her penultimate start over six furlongs and then slipped at the start and became unbalanced when ending up in third spot last time out over 1100M, just over two lengths behind the winner when returning from a 16-week absence. She is drawn the widest of them all in gate thirteen, but given her style of racing, she is likely to be dropped out of it in the early stages and then start to pick off the front runners over the closing stages of the race.

BRIGHT FLIGHT had her consistency rewarded with a victory last time out over six furlongs, putting four and a half lengths between herself and the balance of the field. She went from gun to tape that day and the form of that race has been franked. From a useful draw three, she should not ne lightly dismissed.

EXTRAWEIRD won by 2.3L when making his debut over 1100M, this after kicking clear of the field at the 300M mark. She gets gate six and would have learned from that experience. With the natural improvement that can be expected, she should be included in all bets.
