Race 5
This looks to be a tricky race to start off the day’s Jackpot with plenty of runners in with a realistic chance of finding the winner’s box, so some caution is suggested. THIS IS THE MOMENT was slow away and had to be held up at the 400M mark, but finished off his race well to end up in third place last time out over a mile, 1.8L behind the winner. He will have to negotiate the widest draw of them all in gate nineteen, but he should be doing his best work late.
On the other hand, PROMISING PROSPECT has cracked pole position and lost two lengths at the start, finding himself at the back of the field and forcing him to come the widest into the home straight, but he delivered a powerful finish over the closing stages to be just 1,8L back from the winner last time out over six furlongs.
SUPER DEFENSE has only had two runs to date, finishing fourth on debut over 1500M and then showing the expected improvement to win by 0.8L next time out over a mile. He went from jump to wire that day and whilst taking on stronger here, he is likely to attempt similar frontrunning tactics today, jumping from his handy draw four and he may well be up to the task at hand. The gelding will have ex-SA jockey Brandon Lerena in the irons, so will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle.
Race 6
There are two unraced runners in the field, so keep an eye on the betting markets to get some indication as to whether either of the connection believe that they can win first time out. Any betting support for either, or both, should be respected. Of the raced runners, GODZILLA may prove to be the best. He finished seventh in his latest outing over seven furlongs, eight and a half lengths off the winner, when returning from a 17-week rest. He would have come on further with that run under his belt and could be the one that they all have to beat.
Two 3-year-old fillies could chase him home, with the slight preference going to WILLABELLE who was crowded at the start and had to be held up at the top of the home straight, before not getting the clearest of passages in the home straight to finish sixth on debut over six furlongs, 4.2L adrift of the victor. She would have learnt from that experience and has a useful gate two. With ex-SA jockey Brandon Lerena in the irons, she should be right up there when they hit the line.
ART VOLANT made good late progress to finish fourth last time out over seven furlongs, just over two lengths behind the winner. She jumps from gate five and gets the services of another ex-SA jockey, Keagan Latham and should be included in all bets.
Race 7
The day’s value bet, INVASIVE showed solid improvement to win his last start over six furlongs by a neck. He went from gun to tape and despite hanging out down the home stretch, he was able to hold off all the late challengers in the dash down to the wire. The gelding has his peak run after returning from a 27-week absence and faces a wide draw ten, but on the plus side, he will have 1.5kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice.
JUST GO BANG was returning from a 22-week rest when finishing third last time out over six furlongs, 2.8L back from the winner and now returns from a 24-week break without having had a barrier trial, so his fitness will have to be taken on trust, but he gets a kinder draw two and should make his presence felt.
MISSILE SEEKER has finished closer to the winner in each of his last three starts, the latest when second over 1100M, just a head behind the winner, but he dwelt at the start in that event, losing a length, but finished strongly from some way back. The gelding was returning from a 13-week spell that day and has pulled a cosy draw four.
Race 8
Two 3-year-old fillies and a 5-year-old mare could fight out the finish to this race and complete the trifecta, but the day’s best bet, MISS SCOOP is taken to lead the field home. She put three lengths between herself and the opposition to win on debut over 1100M, this after racing up with the speed and then kicking clear at the top of the home straight to win easing down. The form of that race has stood up well with three runners out of that contest subsequently winning and from gate six and with having 1.5kgs removed from her allocated weight courtesy of her claiming apprentice, she could prove hard to topple.
STRAIGHT FIRE finished third first time out over 1100M and then improved to win next time out over six furlongs by a half-length, notwithstanding having to weave his way through traffic down the home straight. The form of that race has also been franked and from a useful draw four, he could be the biggest danger to the top pick.
TOKYO ICE had her consistency rewarded with her maiden victory last time out over six furlongs, albeit by a comfortable 4.3L. She went from jump to wire that day and from a wide gate eleven, she should use her early gate speed to move across without expending too much energy to be involved in the finish.
