Race 4
There are six unraced runners in the field, so as is always the case in these types of races, a keen eye should be kept on the betting markets to get some indication as to whether any of the connections believe that they can win first-time out. Any betting support for a runner or runners should be respected. Of the raced runners, SIDE SHOW may well prove to be the best. He has finished closer to the winner in each of his last three starts, the latest when third over six furlongs, just over a length behind the winner, when staying on well over the closing stages. The gelding has a handy draw four and will be having his peak run for his new trainer.
MAGIC LEPRECHAUN has only had two runs to date, finishing fourth on debut over 1100M and then sixth next time out over 1300M, 0.8L back from the victor, but he jumped awkwardly that day and then had to be held up until the 150M mark, so can be considered an unlucky loser. The gelding faces a wide draw 13, but will have ex-SA jockey Keagan Latham in the irons, so will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle.
GODZILLA jumped awkwardly bumping another runner, but made good late progress over the latter stages to end up in fourth place last time out over seven furlongs, 3.7L back from the winner. He returns from a 17-week break but has had two barrier trials, finishing second in the first and third in the latest. From a useful gate three, he should not be lightly ignored.
Race 5
As with the previous race, there are six unraced runners in this contest, so the same comment in respect of keeping an eye on the betting moves applies here as well. However, three 3-year-old fillies could fight out the finish to this contest and complete the trifecta, but BONITA QUEEN could be the pick. She had finished second in her two runs prior to being a tad disappointing when finishing eighth last time out over 1100M, just under ten and a half lengths adrift of the winner, but she raced three wide throughout in that event, so she had an excuse. She was also returning from an 18-week break that day and has won a subsequent barrier trial. Notwithstanding a wide draw ten, she will be hoping to bounce back to her better form today.
SILVER CLIFF makes her debut, but has won her two barrier trials to showcase her well-being and jumps from gate seven.
OCEANS QUIET is another debutant who has also won her two barrier trials. She gets a kinder draw two and could be just about anything.
Race 6
TENDER STREAK is a 3-year-old filly taking on the boys, but she had her consistency rewarded with her maiden victory last time out over six furlongs by putting three and a half lengths between herself and the opposition, this despite being slow away and eased at the 800M mark. She returns from a 24-week rest, but has won her only barrier trial to prove her fitness. The filly takes on stronger here, but from her cozy draw three, she may well be good enough and is made the best bet on the day’s card.
C’MON MATE jumped awkwardly but recovered quickly to pick up the lead when finishing second in his latest outing over six furlongs, just a short-head behind the winner. He battled all the way down to the wire that day and from gate five, he could emerge as the biggest danger to the top pick. The gelding does return from a 20-week spell, but has finished second in his only barrier trial to prove his well-being.
LOS PADRES followed up his penultimate run victory over 1100M with a fourth-place finish next time out over the same sprint trip, two and a half lengths back from the winner and was then moved to a new yard. He had to be held up at the top of the home straight that day, but finished well when seeing daylight. The gelding resumes after an 18-week absence, but has finished second in his only barrier trial and has his first run for his new trainer. If fully settled into his new surroundings, he should give a good account of himself here, jumping from gate seven and having 1.5kgs removed from his allocated weight courtesy of his claiming apprentice.
Race 7
The day’s value bet, BAT OUT OF HELL has cracked pole position and finished fifth in his latest outing over seven furlongs, 3.8L behind the winner. He has his peak run after returning from a 21-week rest and could be the one that they all have to beat.
PENNYPACKER jumped awkwardly but stayed on well over the latter stages when ending up in fifth spot last time out over six furlongs, just over four and a half lengths adrift of the victor. The gelding will have to negotiate a wide draw ten, but he should be right up there when they hit the line.
FIDDLERS GREEN won his penultimate start over seven furlongs and then finished fifth next time out over 1500M, just under four lengths back from the winner, but he was slow away on that occasion and then raced wide without cover. He was also reported to have been slightly lame in his near foreleg, so that effort is best ignored. The gelding returns from a 21-week rest, but has had two barrier trials, finishing second in the latest. He has pulled gate seven and should be included in all bets.
