Race 5.

With the late scratching of two of her main rivals, the door may have opened for today’s best bet, ZIPPY POWER to chalk up her second career victory. She is a 3yr old filly taking on the boys, but she had her consistency rewarded with a half length victory last time out over 1500M, this despite racing wide without cover and having to be eased at the 1200M mark. She gets a handy draw three and could prove hard to topple in this line-up.

TILLMAN is seldom far off the action and raced just behind the leaders before kicking clear of the field at the top of the home straight, only to be run out of it late, ending up in third [place over a mile, just over two lengths behind the winner. He gets gate six and could emerge as the biggest danger to the top choice.

REACH BEYOND won over this journey three runs back and then finished fourth last time out over seven furlongs, 3.3L back from the winner when returning from a 36 week break. He is drawn one inside the latter and will get 2kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice to aid his cause.

Race 6.

STREET POWER put his disappointing penultimate run over six furlongs behind him when finishing second last time out when dropping down to today’s sprint distance, just a half length behind the winner. He attracted plenty of betting support that day and finished his race off strongly. From a useful draw four, he will be hoping to make amends here.

ONE PENNY is a 3yr old filly taking on males, but she won over five furlongs three runs back and then finished second in her penultimate run before being a tad disappointing last time out when stepping up to 1100M, finishing in thirteenth position, ten lengths adrift of the winner, but she did jump awkwardly that day and her jockey reported that she should be better suited to the minimum trip. She is sure to put her pole position to good use.

CASINO LORD was bumped at the start and then had to be held up at the 200M pole when ending up in thirteenth spot last time out over six furlongs, five lengths off the winner. He returns from an 18 week absence, but did finish fourth in his only barrier trial. Jumping from one gate outside the latter and with having 2kgs removed from his allocated weight courtesy of his claiming apprentice, he should be included in all bets.

Race 7.

The day’s value bet, BAY OF KOTOR is a 5yr old mare taking on boys, but she won over this distance three runs back and then finished second last time out over six furlongs, just a head behind the victor. She was returning from a 15 week rest that day and came wide into the home straight, before delivering a strong finish, only to be denied victory in the shadow of the post. She has cracked pole position and will be looking to chalk up her second career win today.

FINAL STATEMENT has only had the two runs to date, finishing fourth on debut over 1100M and then showing the expected improvement to win by a half length over six furlongs at the second time of asking, notwithstanding hanging out down the home straight. The gelding has finished fifth in a subsequent barrier trial and with have ex-SA jockey Brandon Lerena in the irons, so will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle.

BEL SUONO is a 4yr old filly who followed up her penultimate run victory over 1300M with a seventh place finish last time out over seven furlongs, just under three lengths off the winner. She is drawn one inside the latter and should do better over what appears to be a more suitable distance.

Race 8.

EPIC TIME won his penultimate start over five furlongs and then finished second over the same trip last time out, 0.8L behind the winner. He jumped awkwardly in that contest, but made good late progress over the latter stages of the race. The gelding gets a wideish gate eight, but he should be right up there when they hit the line.

RUPERTSON showed plenty of toe when finishing a short-head second over this distance last time out when returning from a 17 week rest. He jumps from a cozy gate two and could give Brandon Lerena a double in the day’s Jackpot.

MISS BARTY’S PARTY is a 4yr old filly taking on males, but she has consistent formlines to his name, finishing third last time out over 1100M, just under a length behind the winner when returning from a longer 26 week spell. She is drawn wide in gate thirteen, but given her style of racing, she is likely to be dropped out of it in the early stages and then start to pick off the front runners over the closing stages of the race.
