Race 4
There are five unraced runners in the field, so as is always the case in these types of races, a keen eye should be kept on the betting markets to get some indication as to whether any of the connections believe that they can win first-time out. Any betting support for a runner or runners should be respected. Of the raced runners, SIDENAY may well prove to be the best. He has finished second in his last two starts, the latest when racing just behind the leaders and staying on well to be just a head behind the winner over six furlongs. He gets gate six and should be right up there when they hit the line.
SHIGERU has finished closer to the winner in each of his last three starts, the latest when second over 1300M, just under a half-length behind the winner. The gelding jumped awkwardly that day, but struck the front at the 200M mark, only to be run out of it late. He does return from a 49-week spell, but has had two barrier trials, finishing fourth in the latest and the fact that his connections have brought him back into racing after such a lengthy absence would seem to suggest that they believe that he still has something more to offer them.
CAPITAMY put his disappointing penultimate start over five furlongs behind him when finishing third next time out over six furlongs, 1.8L back from the winner. He was slow away in that event but battled all the way down to the wire. The gelding will have to overcome a wide draw nine, but he should not be easily discarded.
Race 5
GO ISLA GO is a 3-year-old filly taking on the boys, but she has cracked pole position and had her consistency rewarded with her maiden victory by 0.8L last time out over six furlongs. She showed plenty of toe that day and whilst taking on stronger here, she may well be up to the task at hand.
GARDENZIO is seldom far too off the action, finishing sixth last time out over 1100M just under three and a half lengths back from the winner, when returning from an 18-week break. He is also a speedy sort who jumps from gate five and should turn in another honest performance today.
CALAMITY FOX overraced throughout before ending up in fourth place last time out over 1300M, just a length and a half back from the winner. The drop in trip should be to his liking and from a useful draw three, he should be included in all bets.
Race 6
A 4-year-old filly and a 5-year-old mare could fight out the finish to this race and complete the exacta, but the day’s best bet, OAKFIELD MAMSELLE is taken to lead the field home. She was returning from a 19-week rest and having her first run for her new trainer when winning her penultimate run over 1300M and then followed that up with a second-place finish next time out over seven furlongs, just a head back from the winner. She delivered a powerful finish over the closing stages that day, suggesting that the extra ground on offer here will be to her liking. The filly has pulled gate five and could prove hard to beat.
FLYING STEP has turned in two solid last runs, finishing third on both occasions over today’s journey, the latest just a length back from the winner. She is drawn one inside the top pick and could be her biggest threat.
UNCAGED won over six furlongs three runs back, finished third in his penultimate start over a mile and then a disappointing ninth in his latest outing also over a mile, 14.8L adrift of the winner, but he had nothing go his way that day. He jumped a crossing shortly after the start, raced wide without cover throughout and was reported to have lost an off-hind shoe during the race. In addition, his jockey put up 1kg overweight, so that effort is best ignored. The gelding jumps from a wideish draw eight but should still be involved in the finish.
Race 7
ZEDARI goes for his hat-trick after victories over six furlongs and the latest over 1300M by 0.8L. He raced three wide throughout, but kicked clear of the opposition at the top of the home straight and then held off all the late challengers in the dash down to the wire. The gelding has a cosy draw two and is taken to be the value bet on the day’s program.
XTRA APPROVAL raced just behind the leader and was only grabbed over the final 100M when finishing fifth in his latest outing over six furlongs, just under two and a half lengths off the winner. The gelding faces a wideish gate eight, but he will be hoping to chalk up his sixth career victory.
JACENZA had to be steadied at the 800M pole and raced three wide throughout when ending up in seventh place last time out over five furlongs, just under three and a half lengths behind the victor, but that was at a stronger center and the form of that race has been franked. He will be having his peak run after a 22 week spell and whilst he is drawn one outside the latter, on the plus side, he will have 1.5kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice.
