Race 4
PIERONIMO was held up approaching the home turn, but stayed on well when clear at the 250M mark to end up in second place last time out over 1500M, just over four lengths behind the winner. He has pulled draw six and will be having his peak run after returning from a 26 week break.
STEEL CLAWS has consistent formlines to his name, finishing fourth in his latest outing over 1400M, just over a length back from the winner. The gelding will have to negotiate a wide draw ten, but on the plus side, he will get 1.5kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice and should turn in another honest performance here.
SOUTHERLY BUSTER has only had three runs to date, finishing third twice prior to being a bit disappointing when finishing seventh last time out over 1800M, just over twelve lengths adrift of the victor, but he tried to go from jump to wire in heavy going that day and did not go on with his effort over the closing stages, so that effort is best ignored. The gelding faces an even wider draw fourteen, but he should use his early gate speed to move across without expending too much energy.
Race 5
CALICO MISS is a 3yr old filly taking on the boys, but she won by just over two and a half lengths when making her debut over 1200M, this despite overracing. She would have learnt from that experience and although taking on stronger here, with the natural improvement that can be expected, she could be the one that they all have to beat, jumping from a handy draw three.
HOLLYWOOD GOLD has an even better pole position and followed up his penultimate run victory over 1100M with a third place finish next time out over 1000M, 2.7L back from the winner, when returning from a 26 week break. He came four wide into the home straight in that event, but stayed on well over the latter stages and he should be right up there when they hit the line.
CLIMATE CONTROL is seldom far off the action and although recorded as finishing seventh in his latest outing over 1100M, he was just under a length and a half off the winner. It should however be noted that he jumped awkwardly that day and lost a shoe in running, so he had his excuses. He on the other hand will have to deal with a wide draw sixteen, but he is likely to be dropped out of it in the early stages and then start to pick off the front runners over the latter part of the race.
Race 6
The day’s value bet, TULIPWOOD is a 3yr old filly bumping males, but she has finished third in two of her last three starts and second in the other. She struck the front at the 200M mark and was only grabbed late when ending up in third spot last time out over 1500M, just over a length behind the winner. The filly gets a set of blinkers fitted for the first time and if these have the desired effect, she should be a big runner here, jumping from gate seven and possibly being better suited to the drop in trip.
SOCIAL OUTCAST finished strongly to win his last start over 1300M by just under a length and a half. He gets a useful draw three and will have 2kgs removed from his allocated weight courtesy of his claiming apprentice.
MAJOR MAKEOVER kicked clear of the field and then held off all the late challengers in the dash down to the wire to win his last start over 1400M by a neck. The gelding has gate six and should not be lightly overlooked.
Race 7
ZAMPANO was slow away and did not get the clearest of passages in the home straight, only seeing daylight at the 200M mark, before finishing off his race well, ending up in fourth place last time out over 1000M, 2.7L behind the winner. That was also at a stronger center and with him having his peak run after returning from a 17 week rest, he is taken to be the best bet on the day’s card, as he is sure to put his pole position to good use. Two 4yr old fillies could chase him home, but NOT WRITTEN OFF may well prove to be the better. She showed plenty of toe when finishing fifth in her latest outing over 1000M, four and a half lengths behind the winner. The filly returns after a 23 week break, but has had two barrier trials, finishing third in the first and winning the latest to showcase her well-being. She has a cozy draw three and will have ex-SA jockey Donovan Dillon in the irons, so she will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle.
MOVE SHE CAN followed up her penultimate start victory over 1000M with a third place finish next time out over the same sprint trip, just a length back from the winner. She tried to go from gun to tape on that occasion and whilst drawn wide in gate nine, she is likely to attempt similar frontrunning tactics today to be involved in the finish.
