Race 5
TYMPANIST followed up his penultimate run victory over a mile with a second-place finish next time out over the same journey, just a neck back from the winner. He came three wide into the home straight that day but finished off his race strongly from some way back. The gelding gets draw five and is trained by ex-SA jockey/trainer David Payne and will be ridden by ex-SA jockey Keagan Latham and looks to be the one to side with here.
SUMO STAR has cracked pole position and has consistent formlines to his name, finishing third last time out over seven furlongs, just under two lengths behind the winner. The gelding tried to go from jump to wire that day and from pole, he is likely to attempt similar tactics today.
EAU DE VIE is a 4-year-old filly taking on the boys, but she has won two of her last three starts, the latest over 1500M by a length. She sat just behind the leader that day before hitting the front at the 250M mark and then holding off all the late challengers in the dash down to the wire. She is drawn the widest of them all in gate eleven, but she should use her early gate speed to move across without expending too much energy.
Race 6
BORDER CONTROL won over five furlongs three runs back and finished second in his next two outings, the latest over 1100M, just a short-head behind the winner. He raced up with the pace and then just failed to hold on over the closing stages. The gelding has a wideish draw eight, but he is a speedy sort who should be able to work his way across without using up too much gas.
TEMPLE RUN had his consistency rewarded with a victory last time out over five furlongs, albeit by just a head. He jumped awkwardly that day and then came four wide into the home straight, but stayed on well over the latter stages. He has a handy draw four and should be right up there when they hit the line.
OCEANS ONE put his disappointing penultimate start over 1100M behind him when finishing second next time out over five furlongs, just a short-head back from the winner, but he was crowded at the start, before kicking clear of the opposition at the top of the home straight, only to be snared in the shadow of the post. The gelding returns from a 19 week break, but has had two barrier trials, winning them both. He is sure to put his pole position to good use.
Race 7
LION’S ROAR is seldom far off the action, finishing third last time out over a mile, just under a half-length back from the winner, but he jumped awkwardly in that event, bumping another runner, so he had his excuse. The gelding has a useful draw three and seems likely to turn in another honest performance today and is considered the best bet on the day’s card.
Although HUETOR is recorded as finishing seventh last time out over ten furlongs, he was just 2.8L back from the winner. He made good late progress from towards the rear of the field in that contest and from gate six, he could emerge as the biggest threat to the top pick.
BABY RIDER raced just behind the frontrunner and then kicked clear of the field at the 300M mark, before fighting off the chasing pack in the run down to the finishing post. The gelding is drawn one inside the latter and should be involved in the finish.
Race 8
The day’s value bet, TANNENBURG has only had two runs to date, finishing third on debut over 1100M and then showing the expected improvement to win a head next time out over 1250M. He delivered a powerful finish that day and despite losing an off-hind shoe, he recorded a facile victory. The form of that race has also stood up well with two runners out of that contest subsequently winning and he would have come on further with that run under his belt. He takes on stronger here, but he could well be up to the task at hand.
SPRING LEE is a 3-year-old filly taking on males, but she goes for her hat-trick after two victories over five furlongs, the latest by putting three lengths between herself and the opposition. She jumps from a cozy draw three and the trio is very much on the cards.
GRAND CRUSADER brushed the rail on the home turn and was then held up till the 100M pole when finishing fifth last time out over 1100M, two lengths off the victor. The gelding will have to deal with a wide gate nine, but he gets the service of Zac Lloyd, son of ex-SA champion jockey, Jeff Lloyd and with better luck in running, he should be a factor here and as such, the gelding should be included in all bets.
