Race 4
The day’s value bet, PIONEER LASS was returning from a 34 week spell and had to be held up between the 400M and 300M mark, but finished off his race well to end up in third spot last time out over 1400M, just over five and a half lengths off the winner. She gets the services of a 2kg claiming apprentice and from her useful draw three, she looks to be the one that they all have to beat.
BINDING was returning from a shorter 16 week rest when finishing tenth in her latest outing over 1600M, just under six and a half lengths adrift of the winner and has finished third in a subsequent barrier trial. She has pulled gate six and she should be right up there when they hit the line.
ZAKIYYA overraced in the early and middle stages when finishing seventh last time out over 1400M, 4.8L behind the winner. The mare has a cozy draw four and if settling better in running and with 3kgs removed from her allocated weight courtesy of her claiming apprentice, she could complete the trifecta.
Race 5
OUR SASSY LADY is a 4yr old filly taking on the boys, but she overraced throughout last time out, nevertheless staying on well to finish third last time out over 1600M, 1.8L behind the winner. She jumps from gate five and will be having her peak run after returning from a 21 week break.
INVINCIBLE SPY missed out on his hat-trick after victories over 1600M and 1800M when finishing seventeenth last time out back over 1600M, 11.7L behind the winner, but he did jump awkwardly that day, before trying to go from jump to wire. He was immediately rested for 24 weeks and returns here after having had the benefit of three barrier trials. From his wideish draw eight and with a 2kg claiming apprentice in the irons, he is likely to attempt similar frontrunning tactics today.
PHYSICIST has finished closer to the winner in each of his last three starts, the latest when third over 1800M, 1.3L behind the victor, but it should be noted that he came four wide into the home straight in that event and then shifted outwards from the 50M pole, so he had his excuses. The gelding is sure to put his pole position to good use.
Race 6
ACCREDITED has finished second in two of his last three outings, the latest over 1100M, when beaten just a short-head. He was returning from a 21 week break that day and did not get the clearest of passages in the home straight, only seeing daylight at the 100M mark and then taking a bump shortly thereafter, so can be considered an unlucky loser. The gelding will have to negotiate a wide draw nine, but is still taken to be the best bet on the day’s card.
LLEWELLYN had his consistency rewarded with a two length victory last time out over 1200M, notwithstanding racing three wide without cover and four wide into the home stretch. He chased hard all the way down to the wire in that event and from gate six, he could be the biggest threat to the top choice. Although
UNION ARMY is recorded as finishing fifth last time out over 1200M, he was just 1.8L behind the winner. He was returning from a 13 week rest on that occasion and had to be held up approaching the home turn. The gelding jumps from a kinder draw three and should be involved in the finish.
