Race 4
Three 3-year-old fillies could fight out the finish to this race and complete the trifecta, but JAWHARAT DUBAI is taken to lead the field home. She has consistent formlines to her name and has finished second or third in all of her last three starts, the latest, one of those second-place finishers, when a short-head behind the winner over 1400M. She struck the front at the 250M mark that day, only to be grabbed in the shadow of the post. From her handy draw three, she will be hoping to go one better today.
CHEERGAL is the stable companion of the top choice and has only had three runs to date, finishing second in two, the latest over 1300M, just a length behind the winner, this despite jumping awkwardly. She battled all the way down to the wire on that occasion and whilst drawn wideish in gate eight, she will be having her peak run after returning from a 29 week break and makes a solid backup for the yard.
FAIR MAIDEN finished seventh on debut over 1200M, just over two lengths back from the victor, but it should be noted that she was bumped at the start and was hampered at the 200m mark, before staying on well over the closing stages. She would have learnt from that experience and with the natural improvement that can be expected, she should be included in all bets, jumping from gate six. There is an unraced runner in the field, so keep an eye on the betting markets to get some indication as to whether his connections believe that they can win first time out. Any betting support for him should be respected.
Race 5
BALLET D’ESPRIT is a 3-year-old filly taking on the boys, but she has only had three runs and followed up her penultimate run victory over 1000M with a third-place finish next time out when stepping up to 1200M, just over three lengths back from the winner, but she had nothing go her way that day. She jumped awkwardly, overraced in the middle stages and was bumped at the 200M pole, so she had her excuses. She was immediately rested for 17 weeks and returns here after having had two barrier trials, finishing fourth in the latest. The filly faces a wide draw twelve, but with better luck in running, she looks to be the one that they all must beat.
GRAND LARCENY also won his penultimate start over 1000M and then finished sixth next time out over the same sprint trip, five lengths off the winner, when returning from a 30-week spell. The colt raced three wide throughout in that event, but the form of that race has stood up well with two runners out of that contest subsequently winning. He gets a kinder draw two and the services of non-claiming apprentice, Zac Lloyd, son of ex-SA champion jockey, Jeff Lloyd, so will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle.
APIC RUN has cracked pole position and goes for his hat-trick after two victories over 1000M, the latest by a length. He showed plenty of toe that day and then held off all the late challengers in the dash down to the wire.
Race 6
The day’s value bet, EMMADELLA is seldom far off the action and made good late progress when finishing second last time out over 1400M, just a length back from the winner. She is sure to put her pole position to good use and turn in another honest performance here.
ZOUPHORIA chased hard and was returning from an 18-week break when ending up in sixth spot last time out over 1200M, just over five lengths adrift of the victor. She would have come on further with that run under her belt and from her cosy draw four, she should be right up there when they hit the line.
NINGALOO STAR won her penultimate start over 1200M by putting 4.8L between herself and the opposition and then finished sixth next time out when dropping down to 1100M, 5.2L behind the winner, but she came three wide into the home straight that day and bumped another runner at the 250M pole, so that effort should be ignored. She gets draw seven and 3kgs taken off her back courtesy of her claiming and will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways today.
Race 7
PURE ALPHA has consistent formlines to his credit and followed up his penultimate run victory over 1400M with a second-place finish next time out over 1300M, just a head back from the winner, when returning from an eighteen-week break. The gelding came three wide into the home straight on that occasion but hit the line hard to just fail and the form of that race has been franked. The gelding has gate five and will be hoping to give champion jockey James McDonald his second winner in the day’s Jackpot, should the top pick win the opening leg.
HEADLEY GRANGE had his consistency rewarded with his third career victory last time out over 1400M, albeit by just a neck, but notwithstanding having to be held up in the home straight until the 300m mark. The gelding finished off his race well when getting clear and although having to negotiate a wide draw twelve, he should be doing his best work late.
BUNKER HUT put his slightly disappointing penultimate start over 1400M behind him when finishing second next time out over 1200M, just a neck back from the winner. He jumped awkwardly in that event and came five wide into the home straight, but chased hard all the way down to the wire. The gelding jumps from a wide gate nine, but on the plus side, he will have 3kgs taken off his back thanks to his claiming apprentice.
