Top Bet

Race 2: ROMAN DISCENT(4)
Jockey: Richard FOURIE – Trainer: Greg ENNION

ROMAN DISCENT is still an improving four-year old who is highly regarded by his conditioner. His victory margin flatters his opposition in his last outing over 12 furlongs but that didn’t fool the handicapper who has upped the son of Dynasty a hefty seven pounds. He tackles much stronger today but should prove equal to the task, particularly with just 52.5kgs and a top jockey in the irons.

Race 5: BLACK ARTHUR(2)
Jockey: Anthony DELPECH – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

There are some top quality sorts on display in this pinnacle stakes event and an exciting finish is expected. The classy BLACK ARTHUR enjoyed a great three-year old campaign and the KZN Guineas victor had a satisfactory last showing in the July from his poor draw. He was making steady late progress and thoroughly deserved his long break during which he would have strengthened further. The Snaith charge could be in for a great summer and his sheer class should make him competitive in this field, despite the fact that he won’t be fully tuned-up.

Race 7: LIVE LIFE(10)
Jockey: Grant VAN NIEKERK – Trainer: Candice BASS-ROBINSON

A competitive field of talented fillies and mares line-up for the renewal of this listed contest which could again go to the younger generation. The expensive purchase LIVE LIFE seems to have trained on after her exploits as a juvenile last campaign. She showed her class, under a huge mass when keeping on well to beat older rivals in a handicap over five furlongs, on her seasonal debut, eight weeks ago. The extremely well-related daughter of Trippi will be much fitter now and she has plenty of class about her. She shoulders a light mass of 52kgs and should make her presence felt.

Race 8: GULF STORM(1)

Jockey: Corne ORFFER – Trainer: Brett CRAWFORD

Last season’s Grade 1 winner GULF STORM has his seasonal debut on slightly unfavourable weight terms but he should be a huge contender in this pinnacle stakes event today. He was slightly disappointing during the KZN winter but ended the campaign with an improved effort in a Grade 1 at Greyville in July. The six-year old gelding finished three parts of a length adrift of the talented mare REAL PRINCESS that day and the pair meet on similar weight terms here. The top selection will be a different proposition back on his home turf and he must be respected.

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY:

Race 3: ELUSIVE SINGER(2)

Jockey: Richard FOURIE – Trainer: G S KOTZEN

This is an intriguing contest where many of the fancied runners are drawn badly. The top selection ELUSIVE SINGER will require all of top jockey Richard Fourie’s expertise as the pair negotiate barrier 13. Trainer Glen Kotzen’s charge has come well in recent efforts and he stayed on for a close 3rd despite racing wide over this c & d, two weeks ago. He has further scope for progress.
