LAURENT DU VAR and QUINLAN give the Corne’ Spies stable a strong hand in this opening juvenile event. The pair were simply outclassed in a Grade 1 recently but showed promise prior to that. The former holds the edge on his track experience though, having shed his maiden tag over this trip. He went close in a subsequent feature and should give a very good account of himself. The bay gelding has all the speedy to overcome his wide. His stablemate is well held on the Barrack Street formline but did finish ahead of the top selection last time out. He has the widest draw to overcome on his track debut though but is his jockey’s solitary ride on the card.

PURPLE DIAMOND appeared just in need of his Highveld debut when close-up in a three-way tussle late last month and he will be fitter today. The well-bred Var colt took a hard ride that day, indicating that he will love every bit of this extra 250m and he still has much more to offer. He meets very ordinary older rivals and should take all the beating.
Race 5: SILKEN(4)
Jockey: Marco VAN RENSBURG – Trainer: Ormond FERRARIS
SILKEN was given a good ride when she beat many of today’s rivals comfortably at the Vaal recently and she is still well-weighted to confirm the form. She placed twice over this c & d prior to that and is clearly the horse to beat.
Race 6: ROMANY PRINCE(1)
Jockey: Muzi YENI – Trainer: Ormond FERRARIS
ROMANY PRINCE was expectedly outclassed at the highest level last month but he drops heavily in class now and can quickly bounce back to form. The classy bay gelding had smart prior form and he loves racing on this tight circuit. He is weighted to reverse the form of his penultimate run with THE ELMO EFFECT (4.5kgs worse off) and merits huge respect in this field. That said, he isn’t best weighted on official ratings.

FREE THE WIND had excuses for a disappointing last outing in a strong maiden line-up, the form of which has already worked out. She will be cherry-ripe on her third run back from an eleven-week rest today and of course finished strongly for a close 2nd over this c & d in her penultimate start. The well-related daughter of Windrush may prefer an extra furlong to be at her best but she will enjoy the likely cracking pace and should be very competitive.
