Race 4: BATTLE OF ARCOLE(2)
Race 6: PEEP SHOW(5)

Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 1: RIVER EMPRESS(1)
Jockey: Strydom P – Trainer: Woodruff G V

RIVER EMPRESS has made decent improvement in her two comeback runs on this surface and she should have more to offer. The four-year old daughter of Dynasty has her peak run from a good draw today and she can stake a serious claim with ‘Striker’ in the saddle.

Race 2: TRIP TEASE(1) – TOP BET
Jockey: Strydom P – Trainer: Goosen L W

TRIP TEASE only just failed to see out six furlongs on this surface last time but the brilliant Trippi gelding reverts to his favourite trip today. His c & d record emphasizes his class and the five-year old gelding should have no equals in this field.

Race 4: MOOGHAMIR(10)
Jockey: Delpech A – Trainer: De Kock M F

The imported Galileo colt MOOGHAMIR surprised his stable with an excellent debut against winners over a mile in KZN during the winter. The three-year old went off at long-odds and despite a slow start, he finished strongly for 2nd, beaten just over two lengths by a quality sort. He was unfortunately withd- rawn when carded to race on Gold Cup Day due to a tract infection but has obviously recovered since and will surely be aimed at the three-year old classics. That debut experience would have brought him on significantly and he should have heaps of improvement to come. The obvious concerns are that he now tries the sand and faces older rivals but he could be way above-average and still take a power of beating. The extra furlong should be right up his alley.

Race 8: IMPERIAL EMPRESS(1)
Jockey: Maujean C – Trainer: Mayhew C J

There are a few frontrunning types in this fillies and mares handicap and they should ensure a decent gallop. That should suit the Toreador mare, IMPERIAL EMPRESS who gets the nod despite receiving the maximum eight pound punishment for her super-impressive last victory. The six-year old was drawn wide- st of 15 when she produced a powerful finish to win easing up over nine furlongs on this track, that day. She should handle this extra furlong, particularly from pole position and is the one to beat.

VALUE BET FOR TODAY:

Race 5: MIRAGE DRIVE(9)
Jockey: Zechner K – Trainer: Zackey T

There are plenty of decent sorts in this very competitive pinnacle stakes event and an exciting finish is expected. There isn’t a natural pacesetter which makes things really interesting and the official ratings may not be the best indicator, particularly in a likely false run affair. The nine-year old MIRAGE DRIVE has a solid record on this surface and he is still loving his racing. He proved that with a feisty last start-to-finish victory in his comeback run over a mile on the grass and it must quickly be pointed out that he was carded to race at this venue last Thursday. His progress there must be monitored but the Kahal gelding could again dictate terms to suit himself and he is a lively threat.
