With just one day to go before the start of the highly anticipated 2025 Telkom Netball League (TNL), Netball South Africa has unveiled an exciting new addition to the game — the “Telkom Supershot.”
In a bold move to intensify gameplay and boost spectator excitement, Netball South Africa has announced the introduction of the Telkom Supershot rule.
For the first time in the league’s history, teams will have the opportunity to score double points by shooting from a designated zone during a high-stakes two-minute period.
This rule will be active during the final two minutes of the first or third quarter, with the choice left to the team that wins the pre-match coin toss.
The selected quarter will activate the Supershot zone, giving goal attackers and shooters a chance to swing momentum with long-range precision.
The announcement has sparked lively reactions from fans across social media.
While many are applauding the innovation, others are calling for a more expansive rollout of the rule.
“Love this! The Supershot is played in English and Australian leagues, and it really can change a team’s game,” said netball enthusiast Cisca De Beer, commending the league for its forward-thinking approach.
“It’s going down the wire — long-range specialists, it’s your time!” added Angel Xoliswa Mokwena.
However, not all fans are convinced by the limited time frame. Some argue that two minutes is simply too short to truly influence the match.
“Please make it every quarter — and even then, two minutes is too short,” said Innocent Mthimunye.
Kamo Pholo echoed the sentiment: “Why just one quarter? It would’ve been more exciting if all four quarters featured the Supershot.”
Despite mixed reactions, the Telkom Supershot is expected to add a thrilling layer of strategy and unpredictability to matches, ensuring that the 2025 season will be one to remember.
The Telkom Netball League officially kicks off with Power Week 1, running from 26 April to 4 May 2025.
