2018 International Rugby: Wales v Tonga Preview

Wales will be looking to build on their victory over Australia when they take on the physical Tongans on Saturday the 17th of November.

The Welsh face a different kind of test this coming weekend with the Tongans coming to town looking to bash and smash their way to a formidable result. The Pacific Islanders have actually enjoyed a decent enough year beating arch-rivals Fiji during the mid-year Test window.

Wales
Warren Gatland will be rather pleased with his side’s showing during 2018. The Dragons started the year rather well winning three of their Six Nations fixtures on the way to finishing as tournament runners-up. They then sent a second-strength side to Argentina for a mid-year Test series, with their jaunt to South America proving extremely successful as they won the series 0-2. They also registered a 20-22 victory over a second-strength South African outfit during the aforementioned window.

Last week’s narrow victory over the Australians was their greatest achievement in 2018, however. The win ended a 13-match losing streak to the Australian’s and will have given the Welshmen a load of confidence heading into their remaining November Tests.

Tonga
2018 has proven to be a bit of historical one for Tongan rugby with the Ikale Tahi registering their first win over Pacific rivals Fiji in nearly a decade. The 19-27 win was made all the more special as the Tongans manage to achieve it in Fiji’s own backyard. They backed this result up in the Pacific Nations Cup as they again beat Samoa 28-18.

While the Tongans will give it their all this Saturday, they don’t really have a chance of winning and a respectable defeat would be well received by the Island nations supporters. If they are to achieve this, then they will need to be disciplined as the Welsh know how to take advantage of a carding.

Verdict: Wales (-21) 9/10 *Forecast handicaps
The Welsh have enjoyed a great season thus far and I can see them putting in another solid shift against a spirited yet limited Tongan outfit.
