In another exciting move, the SABC is set to broadcast the Currie Cup final between the Fidelity ADT Lions and Hollywoodbets Sharks.
The Currie Cup final is scheduled to take place at the Emirates Airline Park in Johannesburg on Saturday at 16:00.
The news that fans who don’t have access to DStv will be able to watch the spectacle were confirmed by SuperSport and SABC in a joint communiqué.
“This comes on the back of strong relations developing between the two broadcasters, following sub-licensing agreements entered into for the MTN8 tournament as well as the Currie Cup,” reads the statement.
“The SABC also broadcasted a semi-final of the Carling Currie Cup last weekend, which will be followed by the final on Saturday between Hollywoodbets Sharks and Fidelity ADT Lions at Emirates Airlines Park.”
The statement shed more light on the sub-licensing of the broadcast rights deal between SuperSport and SABC.
Because of their better buying power, SuperSport has the broadcast rights to all major sports in the country including cricket, rugby and the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
The SABC holds the broadcast rights for all Safa-related events which includes Bafana Bafana, Banyana Banyana and all the other national team matches, and the Hollywoodbets Super League.
However, the relationship between SuperSport and SABC has improved over the past year with the public broadcaster showing one of the Springboks games against New Zealand.
The statement revealed SABC will show a total of 51 PSL matches, while SuperSport televise all the clashes, including all 240 Betway Premiership fixtures.
“We are pleased with this acquisition, which is another demonstration of our commitment to delivering exceptional support content to our diverse audiences,” said SABC Group CEO Nomsa Chabeli.
“Our rights package includes a total of 51 matches, comprising 23 Betway Premiership matches, 10 Carling Black Label Cup matches, 12 Nedbank Cup matches, and 6 National First Division matches. We will broadcast league matches every Saturday on SABC 1 during the league season, ensuring our audience has access to exciting live local football.”
SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha said the latest sub-licence agreement with the SABC is another step towards a strong relationship with the public broadcaster, for the benefit of football lovers across the country and the African continent.
