The Hollywoodbets Sharks XV will look to get their exciting 2024 Carling Currie Cup campaign off to a winning start when they host the Fidelity ADT Lions at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on Friday evening.
This year will see eight teams competing in the Premier Division tournament.
What is special for the Durban-based side is that former Springbok and Sharks star JP Pietersen has been named head coach for the campaign with eighth man Nic Hatton taking over the captain’s armband in Friday’s opening game.
There is an immensely rich history seated in the Currie Cup, with the Hollywoodbets Sharks XV boasting a proud list of achievements since that historic first title in 1990, followed by several trophies won in the ensuing years.

The team picked for this afternoon’s encounter will see the return of seasoned campaigners Daniel Jooste, Reniel Hugo, Lionel Cronje, Yaw Penxe, and Kerron van Vuuren.
The team has a host of U21 players together with some youngsters who are itching to get some much-needed game time to impress the Shark’s top brass in this competition.
Missing many Springboks in the squad ahead of the international season, Pietersen has balanced regular faces with an exciting group of young players he has coached at the junior level over the last couple of years and who are now given the opportunity to make the step up into the senior ranks.
Friday’s match at Hollywoodbets Kings Park is scheduled for a 5:15 pm kick-off.
