June Internationals: Argentina v Wales Preview

International Rugby: South Africa v Wales Preview

Argentina and Wales will lock horns in the first of two Tests on Saturday the 9th of June 2018.

All eyes will turn to the Estadio San Juan Del Bicentenario late on Saturday night with a seemingly rejuvenated Los Pumas outfit taking on the Welsh. The hosts head into this one-off on the back of five defeats from their last six starts, while the Welsh head to South America having won their last three fixtures.

Argentina
They may be heading into this one-off on the back of a dreadful run of form but things look rather rosy for the Argentines heading into this series. The South American’s Super Rugby franchise, the Jaguares have been in sensational form of late and sit second on the South African Super Rugby Conference standings. With the vast majority of the Jaguares team turning out for the Pumas this weekend, you know they will be full of confidence.

While this is an international, I can see the Pumas employing a very similar game plan to the one the Jaguares have applied in Super Rugby. Perhaps there will be a bit more kicking from pivot Nicholas Sanchez, but we should still see a cut and thrust approach from a Pumas side who are lethal on the counter.

Wales
The Dragons may head into this one off the back of three successive victories but they have been far from convincing in 2018. Yes, they did finish second in the Six Nations but that was mainly due to France and Scotland lacking consistency. For my money, this Welsh side has stagnated a hell of a lot and are employing a very bland brand of rugby.

The Welsh do come into this one with the psychological edge having beaten the Argentines in five out of the last six matches contested by the sides. All of those victories came on home soil, however, and the Dragons may well struggle to adapt to Argentine conditions.

Verdict: Argentina (-3.5) 9/10
If the Argentines can translate their Super Rugby form onto the international stage then they should have no problems getting one over a very predictable Welsh outfit.
