Golden Lions vs Griquas
I have really struggled to predict the Lions Currie Cup matches this season mostly because I believe they have punched way above their weight. A group of youngsters that have snuck through a number of wins and eventually found themselves hosting a semifinal. My prediction of the outcome of this fixture however I am very confident about.
The Griquas have been the other surprise package of the season and making the semifinal I would guess was their target. They won’t go further than this unfortunately. They have achieved their goal and well done to them. This match will be a high scoring affair as the Lions are keen to run the ball from everywhere.
Phaka Prediction: Golden Lions to win by 15 points.
Free State Cheetahs vs Sharks
The Cheetahs coach Franco Smith has made some very interesting selections for this encounter. He has decided to keep his scrumhalf and captain Tian Meyer on the wing and then dropped his star winger Darren Adonis for a centre William Small-Smith. This Cheetahs backline isn’t balanced as far as I’m concerned. On the other side, Curwin Bosch returns from injury straight to the starting lineup and the young Boeta Chamberlain who held down the fort in Curwin’s absence has been dropped out of the match 23 completely.
One wonders if that is a rookie error from coach Sean Everitt as Curwin is the only flyhalf in his match day squad. I suspect that this will be a close encounter and if it does go down to the wire and Curwin Bosch survives the 80 minutes then I will have to back him to win the match for the Sharks. If Curwin breaks down injured again then it will be the Cheetahs’ match to lose. I’m gonna put my money on the Sharks medical staff.
Phaka Prediction: Sharks to win by 5 points.
