PRO 14: Round 3 Preview

Rugby Players enter a scrum

Round 3 of the PRO14 season will get underway on Friday the 15th of September.

The Pro 14 enters its third week this coming weekend and we’re in for some cracking rugby, with the highlights seeing Edinburgh and Connacht clash as well as Munster taking on the Ospreys.

Edinburgh v Connacht
Friday 14 September
BT Murrayfield
08:35

To Win (80 Mins)
Edinburgh 3/10
Draw 20/1
Connacht 5/1

We get the Round 3 action underway with a Scottish-Irish affair as Edinburgh take on Connacht at Murrayfield. The hosts have been desperately unlucky during the opening two weeks going down by just four points to Ospreys in their opener and losing by a solitary point to Ulster in Round 2.

Connacht also suffered a narrow defeat in Round 1 as a late Stuart Hogg drop goal saw them go down 26-27 to Glasgow. They managed to bounce back from that defeat last weekend, as they claimed a 32-13 bonus point victory over Zebre.

Verdict: Edinburgh 3/10
The Scottish outfit have been desperately unlucky thus far, and I feel their fortunes are about to change. Get on the hosts to take the spoils here.

Munster v Ospreys
Friday 14 September
Irish Independent Park

20:35

To Win (80 Mins)
Munster 1/3

Draw 20/1
Ospreys 9/4
*forecast odds

Munster will be looking to bounce back from their 15-point away defeat to the Glasgow Warriors when they welcome Conference A leaders, the Ospreys.

The hosts got their campaign off to a solid start as they hammered the Cheetahs 38-0. They were in for a rude awakening the following week, though, as Glasgow utterly dominated them in Round 2.

Ospreys enjoyed a much more productive second week of the season as they beat the Cheetahs 46-14. That bonus point victory coupled with their 17-13 win over Edinburgh in Round 1 has seen them move to the summit of their conference.

Verdict: Munster 1/3 *forecast odds
I can see Munster returning to form on home soil. Ospreys will run them close but the Munstermen should take this one in front of their home faithful

Leinster v Dragons
Saturday 16 September
RDS Arena
18:15

To Win (80 Mins)
Leinster 1/100

Draw 50/1
Dragons 16/1
*forecast odds

The Reigning champions will tackle the Newport Dragons at the RDS Arena in Saturday’s opening fixture.

The hosts will be looking to atone for the rather shabby showing that they put in during last week’s 23-21 away defeat to the Scarlets, while the Dragons come to town looking to build on their five-point victory over the Kings.

Verdict: Leinster 1/100 *forecast odds
I’m expecting Leinster to bounce back in a big way here. Their Irish internationals will have got the rust off last week and I can see them making a big statement after putting in poor shifts. The hosts should take this one by 14 points or more.

Scarlets v Treviso
Saturday 15 September
Parc Y Scarlets
18:15

To Win (80 Mins)
Scarlets 1/25
Draw 20/1

Treviso 9/1
*forecast odds

The Scarlets will be looking to build on their two-point victory over reigning champions Leinster when they take on Treviso this Saturday. The hosts put in a really good shift last week against an undercooked Leinster side and were thoroughly deserving of their win.

Treviso have enjoyed an even more positive start to their campaign with the Italian minnows winning their opening two fixtures. Their first victory was a 17-21 away win over the Dragons while their second was a 27-25 home win over the Cardiff Blues.

Verdict: Treviso 9/1 *forecast odds
This is going to be a very small punt but  I’m going to back the away side to win it. They are in red-hot form and know how to get the job done against Welsh opposition.

Cheetahs v Glasgow Warriors
Saturday 15 September
Toyota Stadium
19:30

To Win (80 Mins)
Cheetahs 11/4
Draw 20/1

Glasgow 3/10

The Cheetahs will be looking to claim their first win if the season when they take on the Glasgow Warriors on Saturday evening. The hosts have endured a wretched start to the season losing their opening two games by scorelines in excess of 30 points.

Glasgow have enjoyed a much more positive start to their campaign winning their opener against Connacht by one point and following that up with a 15 point win over Munster.

Verdict: Glasgow 3/10
The Cheetahs will be ore of a threat on home soil but I still cannot see them beating a very good Glasgow side.

Zebre v Cardiff
Saturday 15 September
Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi
20:35

To Win (80 Mins)
Zebre 19/10
Draw 18/1
Cardiff 9/10

Zebre will be looking to claim their second win of the season when they take on the win less Cardiff Blues this Saturday. The hosts enjoyed a solid start to their campaign beating the Kings 34-16. They were brought crashing back down to earth last week, however, as they went down 32-13 to Connacht.

The Cardiff Blues are yet to win a game this term going down 32-33 to Leinster in the opening round and then following that up with a 27-25 defeat to Treviso.

Verdict: Cardiff 9/10
They went down to Italian opposition last weekend but I cannot see that happening again. My money is on the away side claiming the spoils here.

Kings v Ulster
Sunday 16 September
Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium
14:15

To Win (80 Mins)
Kings 9/2
Draw 28/1

Ulster 1/8
*forecast odds

We close out the Round 3 action with a clash between the win less Kings and an unbeaten Ulster outfit. The hosts head home with only one point fro their two fixtures while Ulster come to town having claimed eight points from their opening two games.

Verdict: Ulster 1/8 *forecast odds
The Irish Province haven’t really been that convincing but they should have little trouble dispatching of a very limited Kings outfit. My money is on the visitors taking this on by 18 points or more.
