Pro14: Round 6 | European Games

Rugby Players enter a scrum

There are five all-European affairs taking place in the Pro14 this weekend. Darry Worthington previews them below.

There was no joy for the underdogs last week as all five European games went the way of the favourites. While Leinster did go into their clash with Connacht at over even money but most pundits expected the reigning champions to get the job done.

This weekend could be far less predictable, however, as there are a host of derbies taking place.

Ulster v Connacht
Friday 5 October
Kingspan Stadium

08:35

To Win (80 Mins)
Ulster 1/3
Draw 19/1
Connacht 23/10

We kick proceedings off with an Irish derby between Conference B’s second-placed side Ulster and Connacht, who lie in fifth place on the Conference A standings. The hosts have managed three wins and a draw from their opening five games while Connacht have two wins from their opening five fixtures.

Both teams head into this one off the back of defeats to local rivals with Ulster being hammered 64-7 by Munster last week and Connacht going down 3-20 to Leinster

Verdict: Connacht 23/10
I was very impressed by Connacht during their fixture against Leinster. It was a game they could well have won if they had been slightly more clinical. I’m expecting a more polished display from them this week. And if they can cut out those schoolboys errors then they may well cause a shock here.

Glasgow Warriors v Zebre
Friday 5 October
BT Murrayfield
08:35

To Win (80 Mins)
Glasgow 1/33
Draw 50/1
Zebre 12/1

Zebre will be looking to cause a massive shock when they travel to Scotland to take on Conference A leaders, Glasgow. The hosts head into their one off the back of fourth win of the season, which saw them beat the Dragons 29-13.

Zebre were far less impressive last week as they went down 8-22 of the Ospreys on home soil. The result has seen them drop to sixth on the Conference A standings – only five points off the last-placed Cheetahs.

Verdict: Glasgow 1/33
Zebre should be cannon-fodder for the Scottish giants. My money is on the hosts taking it by 20 points or more.

Scarlets v Ospreys
Saturday 6 October
Parc Y Scarlets
16:00

To Win (80 Mins)
Scarlets 3/10
Draw 20/1
Ospreys 13/5

Saturday’s opening fixture should be an absolute cracker with Scarlets and Ospreys squaring off in an all-Welsh affair. Both these teams currently occupy lofty positions on their respective conferences with Ospreys second in Pool A and Scarlets third in Pool B.

The Welsh duo also come into this one off the back of solid wins with the hosts beating the Kings 54-12 last weekend and Ospreys beating Zebre 8-22.

Verdict: Scarlets 3/10
This should be a titanic battle but one in which I can see the home side winning by between three and eight points.

Dragons v Cardiff Blues
Saturday 6 October
Rodney Parade
18:15

To Win (80 Mins)
Dragons 4/9
Draw 16/1
Blues 4/9

We travel from Llanelli to Gwent for our next Welsh derby, which will see the Dragons take on the Blues at Rodney Parade. The Dragons have endured a rather tough start to the season and lie fifth on the Conference B standings with two wins under their belts.

The Cardiff Blues – who have been picking up bonus points at will – may have registered the same amount of wins as their opponents but they currently lie in a much healthier position of fourth in Conference A.

The hosts head into this one off a 29-13 loss to Glasgow while Cardiff make the trip having edged the Cheetahs by three points.

Verdict: Dragons 4/9
These derby games tend to go the way of the home side, and I certainly won’t be backing that trend to end here.

Leinster v Munster
Saturday 6 October
Aviva Stadium

19:00

To Win (80 Mins)
Leinster 2/9
Draw 19/1
Munster 3/1

We close out the round with what should be an absolute blockbuster between Irish provinces Leinster and Munster. The hosts head into this one as slight favourites with the ‘books but will need to be wary of a Munster side that will be high on confidence after hammering Ulster last week.

Leinster also head into this one off the back of a victory, although their 3-20 win over Connacht was far less impressive than Munster’s 64-7 win over Ulster.

Verdict: Leinster 2/9
They may not be firing on all cylinders when it comes to their attacking game but Leinster’s dogged defence should still see them to a win here.
