Warren Gatland’s clinical Wales will take on Jacque Brunel’s unpredictable French outfit at the Oita Bank Dome in what will be a clash of styles. Neither side has really set the world alight at this year’s tournament but we can still expect fireworks when these two Six Nations collide in the penultimate 2019 Rugby World Cup semi-final.
Wales v France
Sunday 20 October
Oita Bank Dome
To Win (80 Mins)
Wales (-6.5) 9/10
France (+6.5) 9/10
Warren Gatland’s side have steadily gone about their work this campaign winning all-four of their pool fixtures. While some have criticized the lack of Welsh intent with ball-in-hand, this is not how the Dragons play.
Wales finest hour at the tournament came when they beat a pumped up Australian side 25-29 in a highly controversial match. Their other three victories saw them beat Georgia 43-14, Fiji 29-17, and Uruguay 35-13.
There’s been good news on the injury front for the Welsh this week with Dan Biggar looking more and more likely to overcome his head injury worries.
Le Bleu head into this one without having lost a game at this year’s tournament. They beat a fiery Argentine side by two points in their opener before struggling to victories over minnow sides the United States (33-9) and Tonga (23-21). Their final fixture against England – which was meant to be played last Saturday – was called off due to Typhoon Hagibis which resulted in the French finishing second in Pool B – two points behind pool toppers, England.
In typical French style, their World Cup has been full of controversy with an apparent feud between players and the coaching start resulting in big-mouthed Toulon owner Mourad Boudjellal proclaiming that the players should revolt against the coaches.
Verdict: Wales 4/10
Wales should be able to grind out a win against a French side whom they have beaten in eight of their last nine encounters. I’ll be avoiding the handicap as the French are just too unpredictable a side.
Value Bet: To Score Last – Wales 13/20
There may not be much value for this particular value bet but the Dragons do tend to come home with a wet sail.
