Super Rugby Semi Final: Crusaders v Hurricanes Preview

Super Rugby - players engage in a scrum

The second of this weekend’s Super Rugby semi-final is an all New Zealand affair with the Crusaders hosting the Hurricanes on Saturday the 29th of June.

Reigning Super Rugby champions, the Canterbury Crusaders take on local rivals the Wellington Hurricanes in what should be a cracking semi-final. The hosts are looking to make it to the final of the competition for the third year running while their opponents are looking to return to the Grand Final for the first time since 2016 when they won the tournament.

Crusaders
I could wax lyrical about the Crusaders for days on end such is the stellar rugby the men from Canterbury have produced of the past three seasons.

Scott Roberton’s side have enjoyed yet another marvellous campaign winning 11 of their 16 fixtures while drawing two, having a game called off and losing only twice.

The ‘Saders head into this semi-final in great touch having beaten the Melbourne Rebels 66-0 in their final regular season game and then went on to beat the Highlanders 38-14 in last week’s quarter-final clash.

The Crusaders actually struggled to assert themselves during the first stanza against the Highlanders last week but blitzed their opponents in the second-half with fly-half Richie Mo’unga producing an attacking masterclass.

The recently capped All Black’s battle with national incumbent 10 Beauden Barrett will be the battle to keep your eye on when the two sides lock horns this Saturday.

Hurricanes
I said in my preview last week that I wasn’t entirely convinced by the Hurricanes this season and I stand by my comments after the men from Wellington struggled to put the Bulls away last weekend. They were actually pretty lucky not to have been forced to play a period of extra time with Springbok winger Cortnall Hendricks knocking the ball on when he had a chance to score a late try.

The Hurricanes haven’t had a great time of it against the Crusaders in recent years with this weekend’s hosts winning four of the last five games between the sides, with the visitor’s last victory coming back in March 2018.

Verdict: Crusaders (-10) 9/10
The Crusaders have beaten the Hurricanes by more than ten points in their last four meetings and I can see them racking up another solid winning margin here.
