Top 14 Promotion Play-Off: Brive v Grenoble Preview

Rugby players engage in a tackle

Brive and Grenoble will go head-to-head on Sunday the 2nd of June in the Top 14 promotion-relegation play-off.

Brive will be looking to bounce back from their last-minute loss to Bayonne when they take on a Grenoble outfit who endured a tough return to the Top 14. This is a mammoth game for both sides with the victor set to spend the 2019/20 season in the French top division and the loser relegated to a campaign in the second tier.

Brive v Grenoble
Sunday 2 June

15:15

To Win (80 Mins)
Brive 13/20
Draw 23/1
Grenoble 5/4

Brive
This is a game Brive did not want to play, ad actually didn’t look like they were going to play until a late penalty saw them go down 19-21 to Bayonne last weekend, with the result ensuring that Bayonne will play their trade in the Top 14 next season and that Brive will have to beat Grenoble here if they are to join Bayonne in the top tier.

Brive actually came into last weekend’s game in great form having beaten Vannes 40-20 in the PRO D2 promotion semi-finals. They also enjoyed a great regular season winning 19 of their 30 games on the way to topping the PRO D2 standings.

Grenoble
The away team will be desperate to secure another season in the Top 14. They actually did rather well at times this season but they just couldn’t maintain a decent run of form and ended up finishing the regular season nine points adrift of guaranteed safety.

In terms of recent form, Grenoble have lost four of their last five matches and are currently on a four-game losing streak. Their last defeat was a narrow one, however, going down by just one point to a very good Lyon outfit.

Verdict: Grenoble 5/4
They may have a poor away record but I get this feeling that it will be Grenoble plying their trade in the Top 14 rather than Brive.
