The game brought an end a difficult overseas tour that saw the Durbanites collect six-log points from a potential 15 on offer. They now lie 14th overall after winning one from their three matches to date.

“We just weren’t good enough tonight; too many unforced errors at crucial times, particularly in their 22m when we had opportunities to build pressure,” said Plumtree.

“Particularly in the second-half, we had plenty of territory and possession and we just weren’t clinical enough. That’s something we’re gonna have to look at. Just nowhere near ruthless enough.”

Despite putting themselves into some good positions, it took the Sharks until the final play of the game to record their first try against what was a resolute Benetton outfit, who in turn claimed their first win of the competition.

Said Plum: “I thought Treviso’s defence was outstanding. They scrambled well, they got off the line and put pressure on us and we didn’t handle that well.

“I don’t think there was any lack of trying, I think we were all working hard but it was just individuals, some defensive lapses and not a clinical enough performance.”

The Sharks next tackle defending champions Glasgow Warriors at Hollywoodbets Kings Park.

“We’ve been away for around five weeks if you think about the end of the Currie Cup as well. We’re looking forward to reconnecting with everyone back there and look forward to having a home game.”
