NEWS: Hugo Broos is ready to quit Bafana Bafana if South Africa fail to qualify for 2025 Afcon – ‘I will get on a flight immediately’

On face value, it would take a lot of doing for Bafana Bafana to not qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and head coach Hugo Broos has vowed to step down if he fails the nation.

Bafana are travelling to the Ugandan capital to face The Cranes on Friday, 15 November at Mandela National Stadium in Namboole at 15:00.

Broos’ side will then take on South Sudan on Tuesday, 19 November at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town with the hope of having already qualified when that fixture comes.

The permutations

  • Bafana must win against Uganda on Friday to move to 11 points. Thereafter, they can afford to drop points against South Sudan.
  • If Bafana lose to Uganda, they will have to win against South Sudan to qualify.
  • Bafana can afford to draw both games against Uganda and South Sudan to finish on 10 points and still qualify.
  • Even if Congo Brazzaville win both their games and go level on 10 points, Bafana Bafana qualify with a 6-1 head-to-head scoreline.
  • Bafana will fail to qualify if they lose both games and Congo collect six points.
  • If Bafana draw one and lose the match, while Congo wins both their games – South Africa will not qualify.

Broos says if Bafana fail to qualify, he will not hesitate to walk away from the national team.

“It would be a little shameful for us if we don’t qualify for Afcon, honestly. We have the quality, we won the bronze medal.

“Can you imagine that the bronze medal of nine months ago can’t even qualify for the next Afcon. I am not thinking about that because my confidence is big in the team, but we can’t accept it if we don’t qualify for Afcon,” said Broos.

“Two draws, we will qualify because in the game against Congo, we are the winner. If we get two draws, we have six points ahead and Congo win they will have the same points as us.

“I have to be honest, I looked at the previous weeks and watched the rules to see if we are equal on points because I know a few years ago South Africa were dancing on the pitch but did not qualify. We can’t make a mistake.

“If we lose both games – five minutes after the game, I am taking a flight to Belgium… you can be sure of it. If we can’t win at home against South Sudan, I will immediately take a flight, and you will never see me again,” he added.
