BOLD: ‘I’m the right guy for any job – I am the best coach you are going to get’ – Benni McCarthy talks up Bafana Bafana job & Afcon chances

On any given day, Benni McCarthy will not be shy to blow his own horn and give himself a high-five in public as he claims to be suitable for any and every coaching job in football.

On any given day, Benni McCarthy will not be shy to blow his own horn and give himself a high-five in public as he claims to be suitable for any and every coaching job in football.

McCarthy, fresh from a two-year stint at Manchester United as strikers’ coach and one of Erik Ten Haag’s lieutenants at Old Trafford. His exit from the Red Devils is marred with a lot of finger-pointing as he and Ten Haag have publicly criticised each other after their divorce.

The former FC Porto striker is currently unemployed and was rumoured to be one of the targets to replace Pablo Franco at AmaZulu, but those rumours are a thing of the past. Usuthu have since employed Vusumuzi Vilakazi and Arthur Zwane as co-head coaches.

McCarthy’s name has also been bandied about in the corridors of Chloorkop – the base of Mamelodi Sundowns. However, Manqoba Mngqithi is the man in charge at the moment.

As a popular figure, you would expect that McCarthy would be linked or at least considered for a massive role in South Africa, and that does not come any bigger than the Bafana Bafana top.

His name was mentioned before Hugo Broos was announced, with a report having suggested at the time that the deal between Safa and McCarthy was as good as done.

Essentially, McCarthy is open to any coaching challenge and eager to one day take charge of Bafana, who he believes have what it takes to win the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco next year.

“From where we’ve been and what we have achieved over time, I am impressed with what they have done.

“They are a good generation, the talent is there and we’ve got the players and [with] the right guidance we can achieve things. We can break that barrier and qualify for the [Fifa] World Cup again,” McCarthy said on SuperSport Unplugged.

“Sometimes I don’t even want to watch the World Cup… I’m tired because South Africa is not there. Now I must support my neighbouring country. Yes, I support the continent, of Africa, but I want to support my South Africa but we are never there.

“Finishing third in the Afcon is an amazing achievement. Now we want to strive for more. We want to win the Afcon. We can [win it]. We have the players and we have the generation.

“The people make the decisions, the hierarchy, they are the ones you need to press on this. I am the right guy for any job. I am the best coach you are going to get. That’s my belief, that’s what I believe I can do. But I am not the one who hires and fires,” the all-time Bafana top goalscorer added.
