The German club expect and want Alonso to stay beyond the end of the current season and are keen to extend his contract beyond 2026 to avoid the risk of losing him on a free transfer next year.

Alonso has been heavily linked with Real Madrid, with reports suggesting he could be Carlo Ancelotti’s successor at the Spanish giants with both coach’s contracts set to expire in 2026.

Leverkusen are currently second in the Bundesliga standings, eight points behind league leaders Bayern Munich after 26 matches of the campaign.

A former Spain international, Alonso led Leverkusen to a domestic double last season after going unbeaten in the league and German Cup competitions.
