Chelsea Put Tottenham to the Sword

Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham

Chelsea bounced back to winning ways with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Tottenham at Wembley Stadium on Sunday evening, bringing a close to round two of the 2017/18 EPL campaign.

The English Premier League blockbuster of the week saw Tottenham lock horns with Chelsea on Sunday evening at Wembley Stadium. Marcos Alonso stole the show with a Man of the Match performance, netting a brace to put his team back on winning track.

The Blues made a brighter start to the game with Alvaro Morata failing to put Chelsea in the lead, after missing an absolute gift of a header from the six-yard area with no pressure – other than the media – on the Spaniard. Luckily for Chelsea’s new no. 9, Marcos Alonso turned up with an inch-perfect freekick in the 24th minute to put the champions 1-0 up.

Spurs, who are playing their home games at the national stadium this season, due to the renovations taking place at White Hart Lane, fought their way back into the game, dominating the first half but failing to capitalize on their 64% possession. Harry Kane was his menacing self and was unlucky not to find the back of the net after rattling the bar in the 42nd minute.

Tottenham started the second half just as they ended the first, with intent and determination to find an equalizer. Spurs persisted with their possession based gameplay but Chelsea were up for the challenge were some great counter-attacking football as Willian smashed a low, driven hard shot, beating Hugo Lloris but not the base of the right post.

Michy Batshuayi replaced Alvaro Morata in the 79th minute and almost instantly turned the game on its head, putting the ball past his own goalkeeper with a top header after Christian Eriksen’s teasing freekick.

Chelsea needed a hero to step up to the plate, and that’s exactly what they got with Marcos Alonso striking home with a hard and low shot past a Lloris in the 88th minute to save the Blues from a second consecutive defeat.
