The Premier League is well and truly back! Arsenal started their 2022/23 league campaign on a positive note – dispatching Patrick Viera’s Crystal Palace 2-0.

Liverpool came back from behind twice to rescue a point against newly-promoted Fulham. Antonio Conte’s Tottenham side finished the weekend as the league’s top scorers, putting four past Southampton after conceding early.

The King Power Stadium also saw a goal fest as Brentford came back from two goals down to earn a point. Brighton secured their first ever away win against Manchester United, winning 2-1.

With more twists and turns guaranteed, here are a few points to consider ahead of this round of fixtures!

Monstrous Mitrovic

Aleksandar Mitrovic bagged a brace in his side’s stalemate with Liverpool on opening matchday. The forward attempted 198 shots in the EFL Championship last season – a league-leading total. Furthermore, he netted 43 goals in his 44 league appearances last term and was directly involved in 50% of Fulham’s 106 league goals. The forward will be imperative as Marco Silva goes in search of Fulham’s first league win at Wolves since 1962.

Maddison pulling the strings at Leicester

James Maddison attempted six of Leicester’s 14 shots against Brentford. Whilst the midfielder did not bag a goal, he did register an assist from his five chances created – only Jack Harrison (7) created more chances on the opening weekend. Leicester come up against Arsenal this weekend, with an unwanted record to say the least. Indeed, the Foxes have lost more away top-flight fixtures against the Gunners than against any other side (35).

Haaland looks the real deal

Erling Haaland is currently the league’s joint top scorer with two to his name. The Manchester City forward could have added to his tally as seen by his two big chances missed. The Citizens recorded 10 build up attacks on the opening weekend – double than the next closest club. Haaland attempted five shots during his league debut which was a team-leading total. Safe to say that the big Norwegian is looking at home in the Premier League.

Wilson’s goals still key for mega-rich Newcastle

Calum Wilson found the back of the net in his side’s 2-0 victory against newcomers Nottingham Forest. Despite starting just 16 league fixtures last season, Wilson returned an impressive eight goals. Eddie Howe has galvanised the The Magpies and it showed against Forest- no top flight club attempted more shots than Newcastle (17) over the opening weekend.

New technique, same result for Jorginho

Jorginho opened his account last week, netting from the spot, interestingly having used a more traditional penalty-taking technique this time around. The Italian appears to have abandoned the ol’ hop, skip technique that top-level ‘keepers appeared to have figured out. The London outfit put in a dominant performance against former Blues legend turned manager Frank Lampard, where they enjoyed just under two-thirds of the ball. Indeed, the Chelsea ace is on penalties and for good reason – his six league goals scored last season all came from the spot. Thomas Tuchel takes aim at another former Blue’s manager in Antonio Conte this weekend.
