Benni McCarthy has been showered with praise for the work he's doing at Man United since joining Erik ten Hag's technical staff.
Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag, has showered former Bafana Bafana international Benni McCarthy with praise for his work since arriving at the club.
McCarthy was announced as an addition to Ten Hag’s technical team shortly after the 2022/2023 Premier League season kicked off.
Since arriving, he’s been credited with playing a pivotal role in turning Marcus Rashford’s form around. The Three Lions forward only managed four goals in 25 games last season. This season he has already scored eight and assisted three goals in 18 matches. His improvement in front of the goal also earned him a place in England’s squad for the 2022 World Cup.
Rashford aside, Anthony Martial has also praised McCarthy for the knowledge he’s shared and revealed they communicate quite often.
Speaking to Man United’s internal media, Ten Hag explained the positive impact brought by McCarthy.
“In our coaching staff, we had a lot of defenders and midfield players,” said Ten Hag. “I also wanted to find a good balance. He is offensive [minded] as he is a former striker, and that is also a really specific job task in the team.
“I never played there, so I’m lucky to have someone in my staff who played there. Football is about scoring, and you have a goalkeeping specialist, but you also have offensive specialists, and, in particular, we have a specific scoring trainer.
“He has to add that, in details, working and for the rest of us, he has a relationship to all the players in our squad. He also has to work on the togetherness and he is doing a great job on that.”
Man United are set to face Cyrstal Palace in a Premier League encounter tonight before locking horns with table leaders Arsenal over the weekend.
