The injury to Jesus, who had recently found form for the Gunners with six goals in six games, comes as a major blow for Arsenal as it follows soon after the loss of England winger Bukayo Saka.

The loss of the two forwards has left Arteta looking to dip into the transfer market during the current window.

Speaking to the media ahead of Wednesday’s key clash against Tottenham, Arteta said: “We are actively looking in the market to improve the squad, and that’s been since day one.

“We would be naive not to do that because it’s an opportunity to evolve the team and improve the squad, especially with the circumstances that we have.”

Speaking specifically about the injury to Jesus, he added: “Gabby will undergo surgery in the coming days and will soon begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme.

“We will continue to keep everyone updated with Gabby’s recovery, with everyone at the club fully focused on supporting Gabby to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.”

Arsenal versus Tottenham kicks off on Wednesday evening at 10pm.
