Premier League title race looks epic

Liverpool and Chelsea have kept their identical Premier League records intact after another riveting weekend of English football. Liverpool have quietly gone about their business while much of the league’s oxygen has been sucked up by CR7. Konate looked remarkably assured alongside Van Djik, as Klopp’s men enjoyed the luxury of having a fully fit Joe Gomez and Joel Matip on the bench (if only they had this central defensive situation a year ago). Can the Reds keep up the pace this season? Anyone will agree that their first eleven can derail anyone in Europe. But how will they fair when Mane and Salah ship off to Afcon? Klopp will be hoping that Thiago’s apparent calf injury is less serious than originally suspected. The Spaniard has started to dominate the tempo of matches and is a vital cog in their full-throttle engine room.

Chelsea’s second-half rout of a hapless Spurs further underlined their status as Premier League favourites. They have navigated a tricky start to the campaign, remaining on top of the log despite away trips to Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal. Harry Kane cut a dejected figure as Nuno decided to utilize him in a deeper position off the left-hand side. Seriously, he was like Tom Hanks in Castaway out there. It was a bizarre move, especially without the running power of Lucas Moura. N’Golo Kante came on and completely altered the fabric of the match. The likes of Ndombele and Hojbjerg looked shattered as Kante gave us yet another iteration of his demented Energizer Bunny routine. Tuchel once again showed the importance of proactive management. He could see that the Spurs midfield was there for the taking and never waited for the 85th minute to do something about it (Ole could learn something from this). City dropped points at home while United were unconvincing at West Ham. You just get the feeling that the Reds and the Blues could be prepped for the long haul this season.

Messi firing blanks

It looked like the dream move. Playing for PSG virtually guarantees a level of success. A front three of Neymar, Messi and Mbappe should strike fear into the hearts of anyone. But despite going 6-0 in Ligue A this season, there’s been something deflating about Messi’s arrival at the club. He looked absolutely miffed when Pochettino decided to yank him in the 76th minute. This despite the fact that he had been favouring that left knee throughout the match. In any event, it was left to Argentinian bad-boy Mauro Icardi to snatch the late winner.

It’s certainly an interesting time for PSG. They look set to dominate Ligue 1 this season. But let’s be honest, they signed Messi to finally secure that cursed Champions League trophy. They looked flat against Brugge midweek and something just feels a bit off about this latest PSG side. It must frustrate Messi that Ronaldo has hit the ground running in the most competitive league in Europe while he is yet to score in what should essentially be a procession this year.

Juve in the relegation zone

Now here’s something that simply would have never happened during the Ronaldo era. Juventus currently sit 18th in the Serie A table. Massimiliano Allegri’s men were frustrated by a dogged AC Milan side this weekend, drawing 1-1 in Turin. Juventus were rampant midweek in the Champions League and started ominously enough this weekend, with Alvaro Morata putting them in front after just four minutes. But Milan showed great resilience and equalised through Croatian winger Rebic.

There’s something wonderfully retro about the current Serie A log. Yes, I know Milan did finish 2nd to Inter last season. But Conte’s Inter really dominated the league and never gave the other sides much of a sniff. Inter lead City rivals Milan on goal difference. It does offer the tantalizing prospect of some really monumental Milan derbies this season. Can Stefano Pioli propel Milan to their first Serie A title since 2010/2011.

Real Madrid showing real character

Real look like they could be ready to reassert themselves as the elite club in Spain this season (especially in the wake of the void left by a certain Lio Messi).  Their last-gasp comeback against Valencia was straight out of the Sir Alex Ferguson playbook of footballing miracles.  The rapid Vinicius picked up the equalizer before the evergreen Benzema swooped in to cap off a truly amazing late victory.

I’ve also been impressed with the way young Camavinga has settled at the side.  He looks like he could give Casemiro some much-needed competition as the season progresses.  It also helps that Atletico have been firing blanks this week, registering back-to-back 0-0 draws in Europe and La Liga.  Joao Felix’s second yellow for dissent was the type of idiocy that can permeate Simone’s ultra-aggressive side from time to time.

Player of the week: Robert Lewandowski

I was seriously tempted to go for N’Golo Kante after his kinetic second-half performance against Spurs. Silva may have earned the plaudits but it was Kante who changed the foundation of the match. He basically gassed out Ndombele in about five minutes. De Gea had to be in with a shout following that last-gasp penalty save. But Polish sharpshooter Robert Lewandowski has to earn the top spot this week.

He extended his ridiculous scoring record to 19 consecutive games in competitive matches. He scored the 5th of seven home goals for Bayern against a hapless Bochum. In the process, the 33-year-old scored in his 15th consecutive league appearance. He also set a new Bundesliga record by scoring in his 13th straight home match. He also became the only active player to score a goal against all of the current 18 top-flight sides. A perpetual goal beast, Lewandowski is still a major force in the landscape of European football.
