Free State Stars Clinch Nedbank Cup

Maritzburg United v Free State Stars Preview

Free State Stars are the 2018 Nedbank Cup champions after winning a tightly contested final against Maritzburg United.

The game got off to an exciting start with both sides throwing everything they have at each other but it was Goodman Dlamini’s solitary goal which decided the outcome.

Siphesihle Ndlovu failed to clear the ball in a dangerous position and he got dispossessed by Harris Tchilimbou who picked out unmarked Dlamini. The former AmaZulu man made no mistake with a sumptuous strike which Richard Ofori could do nothing about.

Maritzburg United created numerous chances in the second stanza but they were so unlucky in front of goal. Coach, Fadlu Davids says they have to accept defeat. He also protected the young Ndlovu “I think it’s a mistake the kid will learn from. It’s the only chance they had and they scored.

I’m really proud of my boys as they’ve worked hard since the first day of the preseason.”

Asked about two penalty appeals that were turned down, he wouldn’t be drawn into saying anything controversial about the officials.

“We can talk about decisions all day. We have to improve and win with these decisions going against us,” he said.

Free State Stars coach, Luc Eymael put the victory down to proper analysis and assessment of his team upon joining them. He also says he knew how Mariztburg use wide players in the shape of Ndlovu and Adrea Fileccia to stretch defences.

This is Ea Lla Koto’s first trophy in the PSL era.
