GladAfrica Championship: Gameweek 18 Preview

GladAfrica Championship: Gameweek 17 Preview

Log leaders Ajax Cape Town failed to stretch the lead at the top after losing 2-1 in the Cape derby against Steenberg United. Second-placed Uthonganthi couldn’t take advantage of the situation as they were thrashed by Free State Stars last Sunday. Teams like Real Kings are closing in at the top after registering their third successive win.

Let’s have a look at what gameweek 18 has instore for us.

Saturday 18 January

Real Kings 13/10
Draw 2/1
Steenberg United 2/1
(15:30)
Real Kings have been resurgent under the leadership of new owner Shauwn Mkhize, having won four of their five last games. That has lifted them up to fourth on the table and within two points of the PSL promotional playoff spots.

Lying in third place is their opponents in the shape of Steenberg, who are also unbeaten in the last five games with three wins and two draws. This could go either way, but I’ll be bold and back the home side.

JDR Stars 12/10
Draw 2/1
TS Galaxy 22/10
(15:30)
JDR Stars are looking to bounce back from the 2-1 defeat they suffered at the hands of Swallows last week and they have responded by signing South African born-Nigerian star Nkosinathi Ononogbu Onyedikachi from Tshakhuma.

On the other hand, the fixtures have been coming through thick and fast for TS Galaxy as they have a midweek game against Mbombela United ahead of this encounter. It will be interesting to see how they cope with the workload. My money is on well-rested JDR.

University of Pretoria 14/10
Draw 2/1
Free State Stars 19/10
(15:30)
This is a clash of two teams with contrasting results in recent weeks. University of Pretoria were thumped 4-0 by Mbombela last week which stretched their winless run to three games.

On the other hand, Ea Lla Koto’s impressive 3-1 victory over title-chasing Uthongathi means they head into this game off the back of a three-match winning streak. The momentum is with the visitors hence I’m backing them.

Moroka Swallows 5/10
Draw 33/10
Jomo Cosmos 9/2
(15:30)
Moroka Swallows come flying into this fixture as they have recently recorded four consecutive wins and fighting for PSL promotion is now within reach.

Jomo Cosmos finally registered their third win of the season when they beat embattled TS Sporting 2-1 at home. This will be a tactical game between two experienced sides and I’ll back a share of the spoils.

Sunday 19 January

Royal Eagles 16/10
Draw 2/1
Cape Umoya United 16/10
(15:30)
These two teams have been poor in recent weeks with Royal Eagles anchoring the NFD table with a record of two wins and three defeats in the last five games.

Cape Umoya United’s recent record is even worse, having lost four of their last five games. I can’t separate these two sides and I expect them to cancel each other out.

Tshakhuma 8/10
Draw 22/10
Mbombela United 33/10
(15:30)
Tshakhuma signed Masibusane Zongo last week and the feel-good factor saw them thump bottom-placed Royal Eagles 5-0. The dribbling wizard could make his debut this Sunday when they host Mbombela United who shockingly thrashed University of Pretoria 4-0. Expect a high-scoring affair with TTM coming up tops.

Richards Bay 22/10
Draw 2/1
Uthongathi 12/10
(15:30)
Uthongathi are expected to field newly-signed Siyabonga Nomvethe and Thanduyise Khuboni after suffering a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Free State Stars. The Cane Cutters still lie second on the log and they don’t want to lose ground on second-paced Ajax Cape Town.

On the other hand, Richards Bay snapped a four-match losing streak when they beat struggling Cape Umoya United 1-0. My money is on the Cane Cutters.

TREBLE @ 8/1
Real Kings Win 13/10
JDR Win 12/10
Tshakhuma Win 8/10
