Speaking at the squad announcement for the upcoming 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin, Broos said there aren’t enough young, talented goalies.

“For two years, I’ve been looking for good young South African goalkeepers,” he explains. “But in the PSL, most goalies are from other countries, and our young guys are stuck as backups.”

Broos adds, “We don’t have many big talents right now.” He sees some promise in kids under 20 and 17, but not a lot. Most of his current goalies in the squad are over 29, and he said, “We need to bring in younger players.”

He thinks clubs should stop picking foreign goalies from countries like Zimbabwe or Ghana and give local kids a shot instead.

He highlighted Kaizer Chiefs’ Bruce Bvuma as proof. “Bruce was with us, then lost his spot to a foreign goalie. Now he’s playing great because they gave him a real chance,” Broos added.

“Be patient and let these young guys grow.”
