BAFANA BAFANA: ‘There was perfection’ – Hugo Broos hails win over Congo as best Bafana performance under his tenure

Head coach Hugo Broos hailed Bafana Bafana’s emphatic 5-0 win over Congo in an AFCON qualifier as his side’s best performance under his managerial tenure.

Bathusi Aubaas of South Africa celebrates goal during the 2025 AFCON Qualifier match between South Africa and Congo at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Head coach Hugo Broos hailed Bafana Bafana's emphatic 5-0 win over Congo in Friday's AFCON qualifier as his side's best performance under his managerial tenure.

Midfielder Teboho Mokoena grabbed a brace as Bathusi Aubaas, Lyle Foster and substitute Iqraam Rayners were all on the scoresheet as Bafana outclassed Congo at an electrifying Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday.

A delighted Broos hailed his side’s performance as among the best produced by his side under his tenure as head coach.

“I think we have produced other good performances such as twice against Morocco in the AFCON and at FNB Stadium,” Broos said post-match.

"Today, there was more perfection.

“When you ask players to play in a certain way, they try to do it but sometimes you don’t succeed.”

The men in yellow produced a scintillating performance in front of a bouncing Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium with over 38 000 fans.

Akin to the beloved back-to-back World Cup-winning Springboks, Bafana seem to be similarly capturing the hearts of a sports-mad public.

“We asked them to have a good build-up in possession, we asked them to try to have the mindset of passing forward,” Broos added.

“We asked them to run, not to always come short to the ball. We also asked them when we lose the ball to immediately put pressure on the guy who has the ball.

“We created chances, with goals, everything was there.

“When you take all that into account, maybe you can say that was the best performance from Bafana Bafana since I’ve been here, for sure.”

Bafana will next renew their rivalry with Congo in an away Group K clash on Tuesday.
