A total of 17 players from the Hollywoodbets Super League were called up by Banyana Banyana coach, Desiree Ellis to face Serbia in an international friendly as part of their preparation for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The African champions will participate in the ninth edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. They are in Group G alongside 1991, 2007 & 2019 Bronze medalists, 1995 hosts and 2003 runner-up, Sweden, Italy and Argentina.
The trip to Serbia follows after Banyana were awarded a trophy in Turkey where they drew 1-1 with Slovenia before beating Uzbekistan 3-0 in February, after topping Group A. The Turkish Women’s International Cup went ahead despite the devastating earthquake.
Lelona Daweti of Mamelodi Sundowns is among the new editions in the squad in place of her Sundowns teammate Melinda Kgadiete. Durban-born Lonathemba Mhlongo has been in fine form for UWC and has also been rewarded with a call-up alongside teammate Fikile Magama.
Banyana will depart for Serbia on 6 April ahead of their friendly on 10 April.
