France completely dominated the friendly international at Stade Pierre Mauroy via a brace by Kylian Mbappe and goals from Olivier Giroud, Wissam Ben Yedder and Matteo Guendouzi.

In an interview with KickOff.com, the legendary Bafana coach Barker, who led South Africa to the Africa Cup of Nations title in 1996, stated that he thought the performance was shocking.

“Shocking hey, the performance was shocking,” Barker told KickOff.com.

“They were not good, not good at all. But I thought our goalkeeper Ronwen Williams played well.

“I thought he made a few really good saves. He kept us in the game but, unfortunately, it was not good enough.

“Generally, the whole team was not good enough,” he added.

Former Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego Mphela had a similar reaction describing the performance against France as embarrassing.

“It was embarrassing when our league is considered one of the biggest in Africa. Their approach to the game was not good,” Mphela stated.

“They were lucky not to concede more than five goals against a quality side like France. They were handed a lesson, and hopefully, they will learn from this and improve.”
