NEWS: ‘He received criticism on social media from South Africans who were not happy with his performance’ – Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos on Percy Tau’s exclusion

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has explained why he opted to drop Percy Tau for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan.

Broos named his final 23-man squad on Thursday for the upcoming Afcon qualifiers as they will travel to Kampala to face Uganda at Mandela National Stadium on Friday, 15 November.

After the match against the Uganda Cranes, Bafana will host South Sudan at Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday, 19 November.

Percy Tau, who plays for Al Ahly in Egypt, is reportedly facing challenges under the club’s current head coach, Marcel Koller.

Despite contributing significantly to Al Ahly’s previous successes, Tau’s game time has been inconsistent, leading to speculation about his future at the club.

Reports indicate that his relationship with Koller has deteriorated, which might push Tau to seek opportunities elsewhere.

The uncertainty surrounding his club situation is the reason why Broos opted to leave Tau out of the squad for these crucial qualifiers.

“He (Tau) is not playing at the moment (at Al Ahly) he is always on the bench,” Broos said.

“So, what I said already two months ago, the environment for him at Al Ahly is not positive.

“Some moment they want to sell him, and they say he is not for sale.”

The last time the Lion of Juda donned the national team jersey was during the FIFA World Cup qualifiers in a 1-1 draw against Nigeria where he played 79 minutes in June.

In the following match, Tau was benched and received a lot of criticism on social media, one of the reasons Broos revealed why he didn’t include him in the team.

“Then he received criticism on social media from South Africans who were not happy with his performance,” Broos added.

“So, I don’t think that is the right moment for Percy to be part of Bafana Bafana.

“But that doesn’t mean he will never come back again. I hope that he can change the club.
“So, that he can be in a more positive environment where he can make the performances that we expect from him.

“Then he will be again the very important player for Bafana Bafana.”

Tau still needs to fight for his place with the Red Devils as he played 11 minutes in the first two games in the Egyptian Premier League.
