Bafana Bafana suffered a huge injury blow as head coach Hugo Broos confirmed that talismanic attacker Themba Zwane is set for a spell on the sidelines for several months.
Bafana Bafana were held to a 1-1 draw against Congo in Brazzaville but find themselves in the driving seat to clinch qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Elias Mokwna gave Bafana the lead in the 33rd minute after bundling the ball home to hand the visitors an important lead.
Before the hosts equalised ten minutes later through Mons Bassouamina in added time just before the half-time whistle.
A major setback for Bafana Bafana though, was a serious injury to attacker Themba Zwane, who was an enforced change in the 40th minute due to an Achilles injury.
“Themba Zwane is a very important player for us, so it was definitely not a good thing for us,” Broos said post-match.
“It impacted us that Themba was forced to leave the field due to an injury.
“It’s a big injury, so it’s his Achilles and I am afraid he will be out for months.
“So again, when you lose such an important player, it’s difficult certainly in the game where you’ve been dominating.
“As Themba is someone who can keep the ball, and provide the last pass. He wasn’t there so maybe that is also the reason why we didn’t play so well today.
