Banyana Banyana’s target woman, Jermaine Seoposenswe, is not focused on chasing the golden boot in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) ahead of their semi-final clash with SADC neighbors, Zambia.

Seoposenwe was a hero for the South African women’s national team scoring the only goal of the match in their quarter-final clash against a stubborn Tunisia side.

The markswoman now has two goals in the tournament and only needs one goal to equal the highest goalscorer who has three goals, but Seoposenwe is focused on the team goal.

“As a forward, I want to positively contribute to my team, which means scoring goals so that our team can win, but the objective is to make it to the final. Whoever scores, scores. We aren’t trying to go for individual awards, we came here as a team, and we want to win this as a team. Hopefully, everyone can collectively contribute to the goals of the team, but if I get another goal, so be it, that’s my job,” she said speaking to SuperSport TV.

Banyana will head into this game looking to improve on the brand of football displayed against Tunisia with coach Desiree admitting it wasn’t their best. The team will need to be on its finest form against a Zambia side that thrashed them 3-0 in a friendly back in February of this year.

“I don’t think we played the brand of football we wanted to play in the previous match (Tunisia). We came out playing but after the goal, we went into a little bit of a comfort zone and we didn’t continue to play the way we wanted to play as a team. If you take all the factors that have been surrounding the team like Thembi (Kgatlana’s) injury and Covid cases, so you take all that into consideration and try to focus on such a big match, trying to qualify for the Women’s World cup for a consecutive time, that does put a lot of pressure on the team but I think we showed character in that game,” commented Seoposenswe who concluded they are now fully focused on the Zambia game.

South Africa hasn’t won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations since its inception despite reaching the finals on different occasions. Speaking on the players’ readiness for the challenge ahead of them, coach Desiree Ellis says they’ve been working hard preparing for their neighbors.

“We’ve played Zambia on many occasions. I think they know as much as we know about them, but if we execute our plan we will come away with a positive result,” she said.
